Kings Island (PKI) is off of I-71 and Kings Mill Rd, and I would start by looking for a hotel on that exit. It would be a straight drive right into the park. Fields Ertel exit has nice hotels too, but much more congested. Already mentioned before, but Kings Island Inn is right across from the park. A movie theater is next door too. A Kroger store is just west of the exit.
I think PKI is getting better, especially for the youngest kids. Nick Universe is very nice, and my 8 year daughter loves the Reptar roller coaster. Kind of a coaster built for kids and your feet are dangling from the car (very nice and smooth). The Nick parade at 5:00pm is cute too (not as cute as Disney though). My biggest beef with the park is the food. Very lousy (not even close to WDW or Busch Gardens). Larosas Pizza on International Street is about the only thing the family likes there.
Fourth of July is going to be very crowded. They advertise the night of fire during this time. Please check their website, I'm sure you can get a discount anytime you go.
