The Courage to Ask

There is the power in each of us to accomplish more than we imagine. That power starts with believing in yourself and believing that you have potential. The next step, the hardest one, is learning how to ask your body to deliver that stronger performance.

Before you can ask you have to prove to your body that you do indeed want it. You earn the right to ask with training, diet, and commitment. Asking your body to do what is desired, before you have trained it, is unrealistic and leads to injury. But once you have earned the right, your body will be prepared and ready for increase performance.

Past experiences affect our ability to ask our body to do what we desire for it to do. Previous injuries, self doubt, fear of failure, all play a part. Asking for magic to happen is hard and takes courage. We have to know that if we push our limits then we will succeed. After each push and triumph we become stronger. Even more importantly, we will have more confidence.

Those of us that are self coached have to solve the riddle of when to ask and how much to ask for to succeed. There are plenty of training plans, lots of advice on nutrition, and race preparation out there. Knowing when and how much to push our limits requires the kind of learning that only comes from experience.

Warm up well, then test your wings. See just what you are capable of. Go as hard as you can, go for as long as you can, and then ask your body for just a little more. The real improvement comes when you do that little bit more. Proceed with caution, but with confidence, regular small steps forward will lead to amazing results. It takes courage to ask for more. It requires the wisdom gained from experience not to ask for to much to often.
