One of the things that keep people from doing a long distance event like a half or full marathon is the amount of time required to train for it. I'm talking primarily to my walker buds but the same concept will apply to runners also to an extent.

For most of us doing a half marathon requires being in motion for around 3 hours to 3.5 hours and doing a full requires being in motion for about 6 hours to 7 hours. To finish an event like that you have to train your body to be in motion for that amount of time, not necessarily to be walking or running that long but being in motion.

The important thing is staying in motion so combining activities will get you time in motion but also help with your time management. So you can get the hours in and not have to put your life on hold. I have some combinations that work for me and I'm sure each of us have activities that would fit the bill.

Doing an hour of brisk walking/running and coming home and doing the yard work.

Doing an hour and a half brisk walk/run and then doing the house work, pushing the vacuum, sweeping dusting....

Do your marketing or shopping right after you get your hour of exercise.

An hour of brisk walking before going to an exercise class or doing an exercise video, gets you warmed up and extends the time in motion.

After you get your walk/run, do a good stretching, yoga routine while watching TV instead of just vegging.

Adding extra steps to your day helps also. Parking further away from where you drive to. Stairs instead of elevators. Every little bit helps. Put some thought in it and take every opportunity to get more motion in your day.

Thanks for reading.

I had a great LSD 5 hour 2 minute 39 second leg and heart pounder today. Bicycled 81.86 miles with an average heart rate of 136bpm and a max at 166bpm.

Personally, I think this the best cross training that equates to the time that is needed to complete a marathon. Makes pounding the pavement for extended periods of time a breeze.

Two of my walkers do the bike and one plays tennis as his crosstraining.
