Walking Scared

As an Optician I work at the mall and my clientele is largely made up of people over 40. A lot of them come out to the mall to walk during the cold days of winter. I see a lot of much younger people going by the store and a good portion are overweight. Many are obese, but I never see them walking for exercise only strolling along, often with a phone stuck on their ear. I think this is because the older people are beginning to realize their own morality.

When you reach your forties or fifties and even more so in your sixties you see friends and relatives starting to die pretty regularly and it's hits you that you had better change your life style while you can. Although it's never to late to get some benefit from eating well and exercising, the younger you start the more benefit you are going to get.

There are no guarantees in life, we can never say with certainty that we will be alive and healthy tomorrow. But exercise and a healthy lifestyle is like saving for retirement. You put away money for many years and hope that you have saved enough to have a good life after retirement and not have to live on hotdog helper every day. The younger you are when you start saving the better off you will be. Same thing about the exercise and healthy living.

I have for the most part lived healthy with a few slips, each slip lasting from a few months to the longest lasting 7 years. After each slip it has taken time to get back to feeling strong and fit. But the times of healthy living are way more satisfying than the days of slipping into the depression that so many of us have experienced. That depression where you just blindly eat and drink and close your eyes and mind to what you are doing to your body and your future.

Maybe we just forget sometimes that it's up to each of us to do everything we can to get the most out of our one life. We forget that this life is not rehearsal but it's the show and if we blow it we are done. We have to keep our spirit strong and not let things going on around us cause us to stop believing in how important each of us are. Each of us are worth the effort and each drop of sweat spilled in exercise is cleansing our bodies of the years of neglect.

Thanks for reading.

Panda,

I agree that it's Scary what we have become in America. And lots of folks think the "strolling" with the cell phone counts as excersise....But if your heart rate never gets up then IMHO it's not really going to get the job done.

I also think we are a land of "instant gratification" If we see something we want, we buy it for example. But when we want to lose weight and get fit there's no "instant" pill and folks give up very quickly.

I too spent most of my life outside looking in on the window of healthy living. I started off as a teenager exercising but I never got to the point where I would eat healthy as well. Then, I lost my training partner and I lost my will to train. I got to a very scary point where I almost had a 40" waist and no muscle at all. I was developing sleep apnea and high blood pressure at the same time. Then, I had a revelation of what I was actually doing to myself. I was working in a mall at the time working for a fast food restaurant. On my way out one day, I realized I could feel my stomach "bounce" with every step that I took. That made me sick. Now, I am not going to advocate the measures that I took to loose weight because my diet at the time was not healthy. It worked and I lost 62 pounds pretty quick but it wasn't healthy.

I then got into the gym and started learning proper dietary habits and training habits. I like to think that I have learned a lot and have come a long way. The one thing that I have learned the most though is that anything worth having is worth waiting for. Anything worth wanting is worth working for. Anything worth loving is worth dying for.

I know it sounds cliche but listen to the words. There is a lot of truth there!

Have a good night everyone!

Very true Carol, thanks for your thoughts.

Lots of good role models here on the WISH as well as lots of people beginning their journey. We who have blazed the trail of trial and error can surely help others by showing that we can succeed.

I agree with you Dave. My plan is live today but plan for tomorrow. Train and exercise today and enjoy a nice retirement later!

You may be Jim Fixx, running book author, and die of a massive heart attack while running or you may get hit by a truck tomorrow but if you put in the time and effort, you put the odds in your favor of living a longer healthier life.

When I was 375 lbs, I thought about dying all the time. Now that I am in the 260's and run 3-4 times a week and lift and stretch 5 times a week, I don't think about it so much. I could shed some more pounds but I do feel that I am putting the odds in my favor.
