My mother was put in the hospital Monday and was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She also has empheysema. I received a call at work today from the general surgeon who says she is "very sick". All her blood levels are way off and he wants to prepare me in case we get a call that she's has been moved to ICU and might not make it. Of course, this was a very upsetting phone call as I didn't think she was that sick. One of my co-workers suggested I call her regular dr. Now his version is yes, clinically her #'s dont look good but he said all my mom is worried about is when she can go home. I asked if this was something she would recover from and he said yes. So, who do you believe? I spoke with her tonite and she seemed fine to me.

My dad died from this, I got differnt info from differnt Doctors also, guess it could go either way, I will pray for your mom

I have no idea, mrsstats as to your question, but do hope things go well and your mom improves. She is in my prayers.

I'm praying for your mom, and you. It's hard enough to cope with a sick parent, let alone doctors that don't agree with each other. Hopefully you will get some good answers tomorrow.

Your mom should quit worrying about going home and work on getting better. LOL Pancreatitis is serious enough to have put her in the hospital.

If you ask 5 different doctors you might get different answers from each of them. I would simply assume that she's quite ill and treat her as such, with treatment/therapy recommended.

*hugs* cuz I'm sure you're worried tonite.
I hope all goes well for your mom and that she recovers nicely.

I had pancreatitis 16 years ago when my daughter was born - had a gall stone and it perforated my pancreas. It was very painful, the nerve endings from the pancreas are in th left shoulder and that was more painful than the contractions! I was in the hospital for a month, but it took a year before my enzyme levels were normal. About 5 years ago my father was in the hospital ICU with a man who had a problem with his gallblader and then his pancreas was affected. He was about 50 and ended up being in the hospital for 9 months! He did recover completely! It is a very serious problem, but can be recovered from. Make sure that your mother has an expert in this area. They ended up airflighting the man with my father to a hospital where there was a doctor that dealt with just this type of problem. I am certain that is what saved his life. I hope that your mother is doing better.

My mom's cancer was sitting on her pancreas and she died from it. :(

Please, don't take this lightly.

My Mom was moved to ICU last nite. It appears she is bleeding from somewhere in the GI tract. She lost alot of blood and she needed to be transfused. Now her kidneys are not working. They are doing another blood count tonite to see if the bleeding has stopped. If not, they will have to do a procedure on ther tomorrow that will require anethesia. If they do that they will have to intubate (not sure if that is the right way to spell it) If they do that she has a 50/50 chance of not coming off the ventelator. Things are not looking too good. The dr tells me she is very, very sick. We will see what tomorrow brings. Thanks for the prayers.

I'm keeping her in my prayers.

As I was reading through the first part of this thread I had a bad feeling that your Mom's regular doctor wasn't up to speed with this situation.. :( My ex sister-in-law was hit with pancreatitis out of the blue and spent over a week in the ICU fighting for her life.. No warning - no nothing - just sudden excruciating pain.. I don't think I have ever heard of anyone who wasn't very seriously ill when diagnosed with pancreatitis.. Definitely not something to be takne lightly..

I will say a prayer for your Mom, but you know what? The first doctor seemed to be right on top of things and pretty much told you exactly what was going to happen ahead of time, so if I were you, I would be putting my faith in his answers and not your Mom's regular doctor..

Hang in there - people DO recover from this!

Hugs,
C.Ann

My mom's blood count is better but kidneys are not working. They are putting her on diaylis for a few days. She is still in pain and is still in ICU. Thanks again for the prayers

 for you. I had pancreatitis when I was 18 and I know how painful and scary it can be. You just have to trust the doctors... even though you may be hearing different things from all of them they know what has to be done to get your mom better.

Yes, I do live near my mom. So, I am very involved in her care. As well as my brother and sister who live near by. I am her health care proxy and the one that does the most for her. I am not just saying that my siblings would tell you the same. I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst

Went to see my mom today. She looked worse than yesterday. Her body is all swollen. They have had her on dialysis twice and are hoping this will get her kidneys working. Her nurse told me it is a day to day thing with the pancreitis. Her blood presure was very low also and she is having trouble breathing even with full oxygen.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I don't know anything about the condition, but will add her and you to my prayers.
