Pancake Day

we used to have bed races at University - the first 2 years I was there it was down a very steep hill and was positively dangerous, but then they moved it to a flat course at the bottom of the hill and it was a lot less exciting after that.

I have just tried to view your link Olaf, and it was blocked due to 'inappropriate content' makes me wonder what they are getting upto in those beds????

For DH & myself I made a gorgeous savorury pancake - chicken, mushroom, peppers, onion in a white wine sauce, all wrapped up in crépe-type pancake. The kids had ice cream in thiers.

Yummy!!!

All right, I must be totally honest with you guys. You eat funny pancakes. In all my 40 years (ugh), I have never heard of putting all that stuff (mentioned in previous threads) on a pancake. Now I consider myself an open-minded person, however, there is absolutely no way I'm putting all that stuff on a perfectly fine buttermilk pancake. I will stick to my puritan ways of butter and maple syrup thank you.

Bev, I think you should point out that you went to university over here, hence the bed races. As to the link, I just don't get it. I can get in just fine. :p You're not missing much though.

OK, yeah, what of it? I eat fruit and bacon all the time!;)

or sausage and maple syrup..... (which I happen to love, but I can see why my fellow Brits find it so odd)

When we were in Orlando, Phil had a salad that came with a marshmellow and cream cheese dressing - the look on his face when he tasted it was priceless (he was expecting Mayonaise). He couldn't work out why anyone would put 'an ice cream topping' on his salad.

I should point out that other than at McDonalds, our pancakes are a completely different beast to the American ones, they are very thin and can be served with either sweet or savory fillings. I think in the States you would call them crepes.

And, yes, I did go to University in America - Bed Races was the highlight of Greek Week, a concept quite alien over here.

We could have a whole thread devoted to the culinary curiosities of each country, then we could carry on with 'we speak the same language - differently!'

Such fun to live in a varied world :o)

No kidding Bonzo. You know, I don't live very far from Bill. Whenever I'm out and about, I keep my eyes peeled for a big guy in a kilt. No one has yet fit that description. If I do see him, I'm liable to embarrass him something awful. Probably yell out, "Kilted Yank!" Although, if I did that, my DH would probably divorce me. The Brit in em.

Don't ask me how I managed it-but I thought Pancake day was the last Tuesday in February-so like the good mom i am dutifully served them up to my hungry crew-only to have to do it all again a week later.

I like them very thin with lemon and Lyle's Golden Syrup!

Alison
yum!
