Painting question

So, DH & I decided to paint our bathroom today. overall, it turned out pretty good! even though for one little room its a lot of work! Anyway, to my question. (DH even suggested I post here to ask!) We put down the blue tape along all the edges of everything, the trim, the mirror, the door, etc. And almost everywhere, when we took the tape up, pieces of paint just peeled away, which then led to more work, of doing touch-ups. So...whats the secret? Do you take the tape off when paints still wet, or when its dry, or rip the tape off fast? What? We tried everything, and this always seems to happen to us. Any suggestions for next time?

We do it soon after we paint. If you wait too long the paint does seem to come off. I'm no professional but that's what we found.

That's what I do and it works well.

We always take the tape down as soon as we're done painting. If you give it time to set up, it will stick to and come off with the tape, as you found.

I agree...I always remove it before it gets too dry, but after it's had a chance to set in a little.

I don't pull quickly, just nice and steady.

We find that the paint bleeds through the tape! I just can't win with painting lately... :confused3

we paint with out tape .. iuts too much hassle

We've found that if you take a razor blade tool and lightly run it along between the tape and the paint, the tape will peel right up and no paint comes with it. Until we figured out this little trick we were doing the same as you, lots of touch-ups where the paint came up!

Probably not really through, but under the edge?
We have that problem, too, since we have textured walls now. :rolleyes2: We've had to become obsessive about making sure the edge is down very well. We go over it 5 or 6 times very firmly to make sure it's good and stuck along the entire length. We still have a little bit of bleed, but not as much. I just long for some smooth finish drywall walls instead of all this texture stuff. We had a swirled plaster skim coat in VA, and here in FL have "orange peel" texture. Guess that's appropriate, though!

Have also found in our FL heat that when the sun is shining on the outside of the wall, that that inside wall will not hold tape well...it's simply too hot and the tape slides off! So we have to wait 'til the sun goes down to paint!

We've found that different brands of painters tape work better than others. With the last set of rolls we bought, we didn't have any bleed through or problems with removing the tape.
