During the lulls at work today I've been browsing the forum for tips for our trip and in the DL thread I came across people discussing watercolour name artwork (don't have enough posts to post the links =p)

The few photos I saw are stunning and would make a fantastic souvenir but I was wondering if anyone had brought one with a frame in DL and if they had any issue bringing back to Aus, breaking or fitting in luggage ect?

Only that its been mentioned that the print is an odd shape to get framed and that makes it $$$ to get done at home...

If anyone got one made I'd love to see it :goodvibes

Thanks in advanced =)

Last year my sister got her daughter's name done, but not framed - it was rolled in a cardboard tube and she had it framed after we got home, to avoid it getting broken. Looks really good. I'm not sure how much it cost to get framed, it's long and narrow so was a custom job.

I didn't get the one at Disneyland; but in Chinatown San Francisco there is are similar 'caligraphers' that will paint names. The one with my DS' name on it cost us about $75 - $100 to custom frame over here.

we got ours done... one for each of the three of us .. they are stunning and ours are proudly hanging in our bedroom on the wall opposite our bed... a nice daily visual reminder of our first trip.

we got the square ones done... if i recall correctly it was about $15 or so for the individual names on the square format. they turned out beautifully. i was concerned about the wooden frames/customs and breakage, so we bought them unframed, but since they were square, i just went to ikea when we got home and got some frames there... pretty inexpensive and just used those.

if you want a coloured square frame, these are inexpensive at 7.99

they look a little lurid in the pic, but are really quite lovely... we got the red ones which bring out the colours in our pics quite lovely. big w, target and kmart also have quite lovely square frames at the moment. i have prepurchased some in a dark wood for our next ones we get on this trip :)

Thanks everyone :) Now I'll have to make up my mind of which version to get for myself: a square or rectangle!!! good thing I have 8 months to go ;)

I thought that the squares would be easier to get frames for over here, thanks for the heads up on ikea, that hot pink frame matches the feature wall of my bedroom perfectly! Can even plan to buy the square prints for my little cousins and my sister without worrying about framing issues :)

What is also gorgeous and amazing to watch being made is the..... not sure what they are called.... shadow profile things :confused3 (that is really not the correct name :rotfl: ).

This is what I am talking about

This one was done at WDW but they do them at DL too. It is done with scissors, cutting out the profile and it is exactly right, completely accurate. Really quite amazing how they do it and get the profile so spot on. The guy even got my DS's eyelashes accurate!

Silhouette pictures ;) how much did that roughly cost? ohh the decisions! I've earmarked $1000 to spend at DL on myself :rolleyes1 making up for all the years I missed out as a kid :) plus gotta stock up on Disney kitchen items for when I move out of course :thumbsup2

YES!, thank you! I just couldn't remember the name :rotfl:

They are about $10, but extra for the frame. Can't remember how much the frame was, I think it may have been about $10 too. :confused3

wow. those are pretty. ikea also has the frames for those silhouette pictures too... will have to have one of those made for this trip :)

just make sure the ikea frame is the right size... i made my own matting for the painted name for mine...

her is a (rather dodgy) pic of mine & carlo's taken before the framing & matting:

i really love that ours are quite different & distinct, but have the same rising sun imagery to tie them together. they did give me the option of choosing my character... i got snow white, katrina got tink (her wings form part of the initial K) and they suggested the the dragon for Carlo's name as it lends itself well to the C formation.

these were only the painted initials, then wrote in caligraphic letters the rest of our name... you can get your whole name out in the characters, but those are quite long and i didn't want to have to roll it up. it is quite fascinating to watch, as it's done all with a small sponge edge and then dusted with glitter.

They are gorgeous Alicia, think we will add those to our list next trip!

thanks -- i fell in love when i walked past and saw them and thought they were the perfect kind of practical yet whimsical souvenir from the trip. i'm only sad that we didn't get a pic of trina's name... hers was truly gorgeous... plus as her name has more letters, it looked a little more impressive than ours which only had an extra 5 and 4 letters in the black pen respectively.

not sure what we're getting this time around, but definitely something. they are really visually stunning -- more so than the pics suggest -- and the little bit of glitter they added (micro glitter which catches the light just perfectly) adds to the art, rather than cheapening it...

also, a recommendation... don't go and request the artwork on your last day, request it a day or 2 before... we saw the booth on our 2nd to last day and thought we'd come back on our last and get the painting done.. they have a long line of requests they process in order... we were lucky on our day that they only had a few hour wait, so we hung out in the park, rode some rides and they were ready when we came back... i would definitely recommend doing it on an earlier day in the trip in case they get busy and can't complete it within a few hours like they did ours as they stated that they usually do next day pick up of the art except in very rare instances... or request it as one of the first things you do in the park, then pick it up before you leave :dance3:

Beautiful Alicia :) ohh I can't wait to get one!

My problem is going to be that my first initial being S I probably won't be able to get any princesses :( maybe Ariel? Unless I get the long rectangle one where every letter is done as a character and harder to frame...stupid curved letters =P lol

hey sam... when i spoke to them about carlo's name beginning with a c, they have lots of different options for names which begin with s or c ... when you go up to them, just ask them for their suggestions -- i know they have a huge range :)

i remember seeing dragons (like carlo's which is a stylised mulan kind of dragon) and a version similar to maleficent's dragon, plus ariel, who's tail lends itself to the curved letters.... you could also have your whole name done in characters if you wanted a princess or one of the villains etc in there, and i know they sometimes use castles/flowers/suns/butterflies/ships etc in some of their artwork as well...

i would just highly recommend that you ask to see examples of some of the work they've done... i know they had one framed example with all of the letters of the alphabet. they were truly gorgeous. you could also ask them to describe what kind of images it would have so you can get a pic in your head before purchasing...

Thanks Alicia :) Ariel doesn't look too bad as an S lol I'll take forever to pick mine out when ordering :D

hey sam... on that post i mentioned above, a new poster's name is melissa... her first 's' is ariel and her second 's' looks like it's sleeping beauty with 'sleeping dust's sprinkles... or maybe it's something else, the pic quality is a little hard to make out, but apparently they have a few different options...

a poster did state that the ones done at the downtown disney kiosk seem a little sharper and nicer than the ones done in the park, but i am extremely pleased with ours and don't think the quality could have been better...

i hope when you get yours done, you'll post it on here for us to see :)
