Paid with gift cards- refund?

I paid for my upcoming trip entirely in gift cards that we redeemed after hoarding tons of credit card reward points. With that being said, we have A LOT of gift cards. If, for some reason, I needed to cancel the reservation and get a refund, does all of the money automatically go back onto the original gift cards? I read somewhere that a woman got a sent a new gift card with the full amount on it. I'm not planning on canceling at all, I'm just very very curious. So, how does this work?

All refunds go back to the original source. So, it's a good idea to save those GCs until your trip is over! However, if you have lost or destroyed those GCs, you can still get a refund to a new GC. It will just take longer than if you just have them refunded back to the original cards.
