Are any of you familiar with this?

Last night my DS-13 woke up vomiting. I went into the bathroom when he was done and his entire face was covered in purpley-red dots. They almost reminded me of small blood blisters, but they are not raised. He went back to bed but was up most of the night with vomiting and now diahhrea. The rash on his face looks so much worse this morning. I've never seen anything like it and believe me I've seen all kinds of weird things. We are the family that develops all the strange disorders. Did you know there really is a thing called Cat Scratch Fever!
Anyways, I called the Drs. already this morning and I am waiting to hear back. I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this so many someone can stop my mind from racing. When I looked up those 2 symptoms together it comes up as meningitis :scared1:

Now before I get flames for seemingly asking for medical advice on a message board, that is NOT what I am doing. I am asking if anyone has any insight or experience with these symptoms a I sit here waiting impatiently to her from the Doctors.

Thanks so much! Oh yeah...Good morning to all! ;)

dont know what it is, but hope they get back to you soon.

Ummm, good morning. I'm sorry, it doesn't sound like anything I've seen either. For a second there I thought he had used a marker all over his face.
I hope the docs call you soon.

sounds like petechia (pronounced pEEE tEEE Key a) to me. It is very small hemorrhages (broken vessels if you will) caused by the force of the vomiting.
Also see it lots in pregnant women when they have done forceful pushing to get their babies delivered.

It is self limiting and resolves in a few days.

Hope he is feeling better this am.

Cathy

All the people I know that have had meningitis complain about a headache that won't go away. My best friend's ds had meningitis last year and he was screaming in agony all the way to the ER with his head hurting.

I hope the dr can help him today. How old is he?

Ok, duh, I get that too, when I've gotten really sick. I get broken blood vessels around my eyes when that happens. It is really small dots.
Me being sick is not a pretty sight.

Wow! Keep us posted. That sounds horrible. I hope he's feeling better soon.

It's been 42 years since I had meningitis but this doesn't sound like it at all. I really don't think you need to worry about that one. Best wishes for quick recovery for your son!

Just in case anyone missed the cultural reference, the post title is a quote from a Three Stooges episode, which I used to watch a lot about the same time as my meningitis episode!

Can't offer any insight into the rash but I hope your son gets better soon.

Love the title, that was one of the best Stooge episodes!

I spoke with the Doctor and he needs to go in this afternoon. While it is more than likely blood vessels from the force of the vomiting, they do want to chenk the possibility for meningitis. There have been some cases here in NH recently, one in his school. The rash has not spread (which is a good sign) but he has now developed a fever.
So....I'll know more this afternoon. :( :( :( :(

phorsenuf,

Hang in there. Let us know what the doctor says.

My DD was sick a few weeks ago and had a ton of little blood blister spots all over her face, neck and stomach. It really freaked us out. It turned out to be nothing.

If the fever spikes or he has trouble attempting to touch his chin to his chest then call the doctor back.

Good luck.

Any more updates, phorsenuf? I hope everything is okay.

Well, we headed to the Doctors this afternoon and they are very wishy washy on the whole thing. They are "pretty" sure it is petechiae (as another poster mentioned) due to the force of the vomiting, BUT they have never seen it this severe. He even brought in another Dr and a med student to look at it. Because of the severity of it and his other symptoms (vomiting, diaherra, and he acts like he has a real high fever, but it's only 99.).( He says he's tired, but not sleepy tired and feels "kinda" confused.) He can put his chin down to his chest but does have some discomfort when doing that.) they are doing some blood work. I am now waiting on the results of it. they said they would rather err (sp?) on the side of caution right now. Needless to say I wa sin agreement. So we will wait for now :(
If it is the petechiae it could take weks to clear up. He's not happy about that. I took a pic of his face so when I have the picture developed I'll post it just so you can see what it looks like.
I'll post more when I hear back about the blood work.
Thanks to all!!

Heard from the Dr. last night and blood work looked OK. So we wait. If no more symptoms develop then we chalk it up to the petechiae, which could take a couple of weeks to go away. He seems to being doing OK. No new symtoms except his fever went up a bit last night. He's still snoozing so I'm not sure how he is yet this morning. Ny DH is a little freaky about the whole thing tho, and trust me that is not him. If he gets concerned, I freak! LOL
I need to do some research on the petechiae, I just want to know more about it and if it is a condition that will happen more often now. Anyways, thanks to all and if anything more develops, I'll let you know!!!
