OK my family uses page plus -

Me - iphone 4 (that i had originally with Verizon)
husband - Droid (an older one we bought on ebay)

my kids both have the minutes i purchase every few months with flip phones.

My older son (13) is itching for a smart phone....researching thinking perhaps for graduation this year.

I'm looking to buy him a smartphone - that is pretty much a cool one - but one that will work on pageplus....

any thoughts? can i purchase a new phone and then hook it up with pageplus OR do i need to purchase a used one from ebay?

I have my dad on a page plus plan with a "dumb phone" and considered looking into it myself. The official word is no prepaid phones, and no LTE enabled phones. That gets rid of the vast majority of new phones. The one exception would be the Prepaid Straight Talk Iphones from Walmart. They work with the Verizon network and have LTE disabled so they can be put on PagePlus. Supposedly you can flash a wide variety of additional LTE phones to get them to work on PagePlus. Otherwise, you're looking at an older phone like your husband's Droid.

If you have good AT&T or T-Mobile coverage in the area, you could look at one of their MVNO's or prepaid plans. You can use the latest phones with those plans. You just might not get LTE.

My 12 year old has an iPhone 4s with Page Plus. Everyone else in the family has unlimited data with Verizon. He got my old iPhone. I get him a $12 credit monthly which is more than enough for him as he texts mostly and since he's usually within wifi range, those are free with iMessage. When he doesn't have wifi, he turns data on to get text. I also keep some balance on his account for the few times he needs to use data away from wifi which hardly ever gets used.
Works for us.

on ebay, find a seller with excellent ratings, just type in the search for pageplus....they usually are noted that way...... I have been using a phone (or 2) from Ebay, cost about 50 bucks.... I am thinking I will ugrade my phone, and give mine to ds, it's an older htc incredible, and works just fine....... ds has an old phone with the yearly card on it (minutes), but he can always just turn the data off,and use it as a phone/camera/around wi-fi...(amazing what a 50.00 phone will do these days)

You can activate a ST iphone on PagePlus?! I have been debating on going to ST so I could get my dd a new iphone for Christmas but I didn't want to pay $45 a month for her. She is on PagePlus now but I wasn't sure about getting an iphone from ebay. If could just order one through ST and activate it on her pp account that would be great!!

OP, I'm not sure what you mean by "new", if you mean the pre-packaged pre-paid Verizon phones you cannot activate them on PP.
If you mean walking into a Verizon store and paying full retail for a phone, as long as its not a 4G one I'm pretty sure that would be okay.
We are all PP customers in this house, me, dh and dd all have smartphones that I purchased from ebay. I look for manufacturer refurbished mostly but have purchased seller refurbished ones.

i would love to get him the $12 month plan - thought i had to do the 29.99 monthly with a smart phone...

so he does not go on the internet or text unless he's connected to wi-fi?

My husband has a smartphone on the $12 plan. He uses very little data off WiFi, but it does work.

Mine is a Motorola Droid 2. Its old and slow but I really only use it for texting so I like that it has an actual slide out keyboard. I also only pa $12 a month for it. I rarely use data when I'm out so it works for me. I can use wi-fi at home but I just use my laptop or nook then because the phone is too slow.
Dd has a Droid Incredible and dh has the Incredible 2. They are each on the $30 a month plan because they text more and dh talks more that I do.
Dd isn't happy with her phone so I think I'm getting her an iphone but dh really likes his. I think there might even be an Incredible 3 out, but it might be 4G and not able to be activated.

You can text without data, but you can't send pics unless you are using it. (you can on wi-fi).

I got my son a droid 2 off of eBay and has the 12.00 monthly plan. He uses wifi at home and keeps his data turned off unless he needs it for something. On the 12.00 plan he gets 250 min of talk 250 texts and 10mb of data. It has worked out for us really good. He is asking for a iPhone for Christmas so I will probably get one off of eBay for him.

The thread from Howard forums on the topic can be found here. The Iphone is not "officially" supported but most resellers can activate them without problem. A Verizon Iphone 4 will work fine. It's the Iphone 5 that's the problem and you need to buy the Straight Talk version.

Not sure if they still have them for sale, but, I bought 2 refurbished verizon iphone 4 phones from apple on Woot for about $200 each about 1 week ago. They are on the $12 page plus plan as well. The straight talk phones on Walmart also work because they are also cdma. I bought a refurbished 5 to replace my iphone 4 a few months ago:)

with the 12.00 a month plan or probably any monthly - if you go over on data or texts, are you just not allowed to do anymore or do they charge you overage?

They just cut you off. I keep a balance on my acct just in case, a $10 card lasts 120 days. You don't have to, if you don't have a balance you just wouldn't be able to text, or use data, or talk if you go over your minutes.

Thank you

I have an iPhone 4s, DH has an LG Vortex on PP. Any NON-4G LTE smartphone made for Verizon should work.

I have also heard the iPhone 5 for Straight Talk will also work because the LTE is disabled on that particular variety of the iPhone.

everyone with an iphone on pageplus, do u have to use youmail to get voicemail messages?
