Packing Question for Flight

Is the 3-3-3 rule for carry-ons only or does it apply to checked bags, also?

3-1-1 applies only to carry on. You can put as much liquids as you want in your checked luggage

Not quite "as much as you like...." and there are restrictions as to type (flammable, etc.).

Please do be considerate and double or triple bag it if you are taking any significant quantity- it's no fun getting soaked luggage, especially if you weren't the one to pack the liquid.

You also may want to pay attention to weight and whatever limits apply to your airline.

Thank you! I'm not bringing a ton, just two sets of trial sized shampoo and conditioner. I will make sure to put it in a ziplock bag before putting it in my toiletries bag - great advice, thanks!

And not sure if this has changed since last time I flew, but don't put pressurized cams in your checked bags. No hairspray, shaving cream, foot spray, deodorant, etc...

You'll get to your location and notice it's missing. Apparently it is an explosion hazard in the non pressurized cargo hold of some planes. And since the people checking your bags don't have time to see if the plane you're going on is going to have a pressurized cargo hold or not, they just chunk it all out.

Delta specifically allows hairspray in checked baggage up to 16 ounces. I don't know of any airlines that do not and expect that most allow this. I also don't know what aircraft have non-pressurized cargo holds.

TSA allows aerosols in checked baggage as long as it meets the 3-1-1:

You may carry liquids, gels and aerosols in your carry-on bags only if they adhere to the 3-1-1 rule: containers must be 3.4 ounces or less; stored in a 1 quart/liter zip-top bag; 1 zip-top bag per person, placed in the screening bin. Larger amounts of non-medicinal liquids, gels, and aerosols must be placed in checked baggage.

As long as they are personal care products (i.e. they are applied to your body) and are in reasonable quantities, aerosols are fine. 1 can of hairspray is fine, 50 cans of hairspray is not fine. A single can of spray paint is not fine.

It's been 14 years since I've last flown. And the last flight I was on was US Air from LAX to RDU.

I'm not sure if any planes have non pressurized cargo holds anymore, but some of the older 747's did.

The only reason I brought it up was because I know air line regulations have done nothing but get stricter since 2002.
