Packing Dilema - Multi USB Charger

We took the second device (the 5 port charger). I also ordered a bunch of these cables for Xmas:

I gave them to the nieces and nephews as stocking stuffers and kept a bunch for us. We use only Android devices so just needed the microUSBs.

For packing I just put that 5 port charger (with 5 cables attached) into a zip lock bag and stuffed it into my backpack. When I got there I unpacked, plugged in the charger (it comes with its own single AC cord) and plugged in the phones and tablets as needed.

The AC-only device you have can have it's own charging cord. But for the USB devices the 5 port hub works fine.

What you want to look at the is the max output Amps each device gives you. The 5 port hub we took is 5.1 amps. Enough to charge 5 cellphones or 7" tablets concurrently, or two 10" iPads. The other 4 port hub is 7.1 amps: enough to charge 2 10" iPads and 2 phones/7" tablets concurrently. The Belkin device can only charge one iPad or two phones because it outputs only 2.1amps.

I had a 3rd 10" tablet (Asus Transformer) I brought along but I used it's own power cord for that. It's all bundled inside a netbook case. My two 7-8" tablets and all our phones when on the 5-port charger.

why not just a cheap 6 outlet power strip and the correct AC adapters for the usb only ones.

I have a power strip at home that I use to charge everything -- my work and personal cell phones, work and personal laptops, ECV, and Nook. I have a dual USB to wall adapter (something like this but I got mine from Target years ago) that I use to charge the Nook and personal cell, which need USB. All of my adapters and charges stay attached all the time, I just turn off the power strip when I'm not charging. That way anywhere I go, I just stuff that power strip and all it's attached parts into a bag and I know I have everything. It only takes one plug at my destination and because it's a power strip it has its own fuse in case the circuit is getting overloaded (but I've never had a problem with it.)

I saw something on Facebook the other day saying to use any open USB port on the television to charge things.

I haven't tried it yet. Maybe tonight when I get home.

USB charging has changed over the past few years. There are three USB specs (1.0, 2.0 and 3.0). I don't have time to go into right now, but google it and you can read how different chargers and their output amperage can charge actually charge your battery quicker. There's even differences the in the cables too.

this makes me glad that I'm old!! I bring a phone charger for mine & Hubby's Iphones (1 charger for both, really only need to charge every other day). that's it.

Probably only give you half an amp. So for a phone it will take twice as long, for a tablet four times as long to charge.

Mine is powering my chromecast right now.
