Packing cubes

I love packing cubes. I've traveled for years for work and for me it is second nature to use them. I've done two weeks of international travel in one carry on and a purse.

But when traveling with the kids it gets a bit more complicated. And frankly, I've found quart and gallon sized Ziploc bags where I use color coded Sharpies (each person has a color) to label by day the main outfit of the day and then assorted items (spare undies, socks) and swimsuits, etc. Then I pack at least one day's worth for each person in carry-on and split each person's evenly into the number of checked bags - by day. So checked bag number one has days two and three for everyone - plus assorted snacks. Checked bag number two has days four and five plus assorted snacks kind of thing. If a piece of luggage is lost, we're still fine. And now my kids (even the three year old) understand "the system" and the eight year old just goes and grabs the bag of the day for each of them when it is time to get ready. And yes, we recycle our bags for the next trip!

But as earlier post correctly pointed out - if you match your brand of packing cubes to your luggage, that is indeed the most packing efficient method.
