Packing a computer?

I will be bringing my laptop for the first time. I was thinking I'd just put it in my backpack carryon for the flight. Is this enough protection? I could wrap extra clothes around it. I don't have a travel bag or case for it, but if you think it is necessary, I'll get one. I still plan on putting it in my carryon. What do you use?

I saw at our dollar stores they sell sleeves to hold laptops so I would pick up one of those. Just make sure you can also easily get it out at security if you do wrap it up in your clothes.

ditto - if you carry on you must take it out and pass thru scanner sep'rtly so don't bury it. But you WANT to carry it - not a good thing to put in a checked bag.

I just put my laptop in my "standard" (ie: non-computer based) backpack. I'll usually have a book and some odds and ends, but no special padding.

I would *definitely* get a protective sleeve at least.

Maybe I'll use the box it came in, and tuck that into the backpack. Do you think that would be ok? It's just that I'd like to try to travel light.

The sleeve would probably be just as light and less cumbersome than the box, but protect much better. They are not too costly.

We have Macs and would go nowhere without our cases, but at the very least, a sleeve - computers are just too costly not to protect the best you can.

Have a great trip - we just got back - had a great time as usual.

The other advantage of a neoprene sleeve: you have to remove your laptop from the carryon and send it through the scanner separately. However, it can remain in the sleeve.

The box would be a hassle - you would need to remove it from the box to go thru the scanner, then repack it.
The neoprene bags are very light, very easy to use and will protect from scratches plus some drops.

Yes - as long as there is nothing else in the sleeve, the computer can stay right in it.
We've been bringing a computer with to WDW for at least the last 7 years. The neoprene case works great.

As others have indicated, please remember that your laptop will need to go into it's own bin through security. As long as your prepared for that, it's not really a big deal. Your laptop goes in one bin, your shoes, belts, other items can go in another bin.

This is what I do. I have a neoprene sleeve that the laptop goes in. It then goes into my laptop backpack. I remove the laptop in the sleeve and place it in its own bin. I grab it on the other side and put it back in the backpack.

I am so looking forward to my next flight as I now have an iPad and won't even have to remove that from the backpack!
