Is it worth the savings to book everything yourself?
Seems like about a $500 savings...

The only thing I see (and its sort of a big thing since we had to cancel our last trip!) is the trip insurance.

What am I missing?
Can you buy trip insurance anyplace?

you can buy trip insurance from other companies...insuremytrip.com comes to mind, and I'm SURE there are others but can't recall right now.

We booked this first trip as a package, though we're booking the travel separately. I noticed while looking at AAA and Costco that there's just NO way I was going to pay more for airfare and be on a carrier I don't like...

But this time, we're doing the hotel and tickets as a package. Next time I doubt I will, mainly b/c we plan on upgrading our tickets to APs, and visiting more often! Hopefully with the Entertainment Book rate for a stay at HoJo. :)

I've learned so much since February just by reading here at the Dis, that I'm tempted to dump the package and go a la carte, but it's too late to get the HoJo rate, and I kind of want the lanyard etc from the package. :)

If you book everything on your own, hotels can usually be canceled up to either 48 or 72 hours prior with no penalty (please verify when making reservations). So, you would need trip insurance for the airfare. Car rental (if you have one) usually don't even require the CC, so they can be canceled until 24 hours prior - again verify. Then you have the tickets...not sure if trip insurance would cover this or not. But as the previous post said, you can buy travel insurance from a independent company.

We have never had a problem with booking things ourselves. Saved us $$$.
