I ordered a foldable pack n play mattress for our most recent trip since our 14 month old has had trouble getting comfortable in them or the portable cribs on our last two trips. I have to say it was absolutely perfect! It came with a zip up dust bag and took up about 3/4 of one side of my large suitcase. We also use our own sheet. He slept Perfect every night. Highly recommend as those pack n play mattresses are hard as rocks.
If packaging space is a concern it shipped vacuum sealed so that’s how I carried it down but still fit on the way home using the space I had diapers in on the way down. You could probably buy one of those rollable bags that remove air to condense space further or worst case check it in the dust bag it comes with. That has a zipper and handles.
