We're traveling with a party of 7 and 2 of our group members tend to lose stuff frequently. (Adult men, not kids. Ha!) If we have old magic bands from 2015, should we bring a couple along? Can we switch all of their reservations to an old band, in the event of a missing magic band?

You can have multiple magic bands "active" for each person. You have to link them via MDE.
For our trip last week, we got the new MB2 (generic) but we actually used the character MB1 bands we bought last year. Its great that they have been putting names on the back for a few years now.

You don't switch anything if you bring old bands. Nothing is stored on the band. The band is linked to your account. Make sure the band you want to bring is active in My Disney Experience (MDE) on the web site or app. If they are active you can use them.

Yes, ACTIVE is the key word. You can have as many magic bands linked to your account/you as you want, but only the ACTIVE ones can be used.

I think we have 4 bands each, 2 active and 2 inactive.

If you do lose your magic band you can go to guest services and get a new one too.

So can you have your new band and last year band working at the same time?? Here's my question I guess, my mother in law comes on the trip with us but only meets at the parks for meals, so she will not use her FP's she has always needed to keep her band bc she goes back to the hotel and eats lunch etc there, but then her FP (we just include her on the ones we have) are just wasted each day, but her husband would use them for rides that we don't all go on with the little kids, like space mtn etc. is it possible to have 2 or 3 active bands at a time?

yes -- you can have multiple bands on one profile. I've done split stays every trip for my last three trips, so I have 8 bands just for myself -- and that doesn't count the bands I'm getting for my next trip. They all work for tapstiles...and as long as the batteries are still good, they'll also work for ride photos (e.g., FEA, 7DMT).

If your MIL has extra bands, she could just hand off the extra band to someone else and use her other band to go to the resort. The other option is use the "change party" option in your Disney app. This function allows you to change a fastpass from one party to another party so long as they are profiles controlled by you in your my disney experience account.

We always order new bands every time we go even though we might have ours laying right in front of us. Never know if they still work and I don't like to take chances.

What we did for the last trip, is that I wear (or mom) wears a lanyard cause I'm a pin trader. I don't wear my band every where and just attach it to the lanyard or back pack. It usally never falls off and your wrist doesn't get too sweaty.... hehe.
