Well..it's official. DH needs an MRI. :(

When he was about 8 years old, he had a bicycle accident that required stitches in his head and 24 hrs worth of observation at the local hospital due to the fact that he was unconcious when he was found laying on the side of the road. Nobody knows if he hit an object, fell over and got knocked out or if he was hit by a car.

Anyway...ever since I've known him (and presumably before I don't know for sure),he's had periodic episodes of really, really bad headaches that leave him pretty much incapacitated due to the severity. But they would always go away after a couple of hours as long as he rested and took some Advil or Tyelenol or something.

Tuesday, when I arrived home from work at around 3:30 pm, I found him and DS laying on the floor on a blanket. DH was unconcious and I freaked out. I was able to wake him and get him to take 2 Advil. I sent him to bed and made sure DS stayed quiet so as not to aggravate the condition. About 45 min later, I hear DH in the bathroom, puking his guts out. He's sweating and clammy, but not running a fever. He ends up curled around the toilet and I call a neighbor to take him to the ER because I don't know what's wrong.

At the ER, they take his history and do whatever it is they do there. They give him a CAT scan and ask him if he's ever had any major head trauma. The only thing that comes to mind is the bike accident when he was 8. Apparently there was some internal bleeding that went undetected at the time of his accident and caused a small portion of his brain to die off. This worried the ER docs enough to have him call his reg doctor so that they can schedule an MRI.

I don't even know what an MRI is or what they do to you during the procedure. I am also really scared for DH because there might be something more serious wrong that we don't know about yet. So I have to ask for P and PD for him because we are both terrified about this. He's had a small headache almost constantly ever since Tues night, nothing bad enough to bother him too much but he's popping Advil like they are TicTacs and taking Excederin Migraine at night after he comes home from work.

I am so scared....*shivers* I don't even want to THINK about what this could mean. Hopefully it's just migraines and they can treat it. I'm not gonna think about the worst case scenario at the moment.

Awww! That is so scary! Please know that you are in my prayers, as is your husband and baby! Please take care of yourself! When is the MRI scheduled?

(((hugs)))

MRI's are no big deal as far as the procedure goes, if youre claustrophobic they can give him something because he will bein a tube. See if you can find an "open MRI" that way you just lay on a table and the machine just goes around you instead of being in a tube.
they played music when I went in to mine and I just relaxed.

my dh has migraines like that, they just throw him for a loop totally! He ends up sick and has to have ice on his neck and one of those gel eye pillow things on his eyes those seem to make a big difference to him!
You will all be in my prayers~!

Oh my..I'm so sorry and how scary for you and your family! You will be in our prayers. MRI's are pretty easy. They put you on a table and send you through a cylindrical tube where you have to lie still for several seconds at a time while they take pictures of his head. Sometimes it brings out severe claustrophobia in people that didn't know they were claustrophobic! They will put a metal ring type thing on top of his head and it should take anywhere from 15-45 min depending on how detailed they need to get. It is not painful but it is hard to keep still sometimes especially if you are experiencing clautrophobia!

You will be in my prayers!

I really sorry about your DH - it's so scarry not knowing what could be wrong. Please don't worry about the MRI itself. I've had them done and it's painless. The last one I had was a few years ago and I think the technology is better today. Anyway, when I last had one I was put on a table and the area to be looked at was stabilized with sandbag type things. Then the table I was on was pushed inside a capsule like container which was open on both ends. It was a little noisy (I think now it's much quieter and they can pump in music :D ). It does take a while. I was having a knee looked at and it took 45 min. Your DH's might be longer because it's more complex.

Anyway, prayers and PD that all is well in the end.

BTW, severe migranes can cause vomiting and cold sweats.

Please take care of yourself! When is the MRI scheduled?
We don't know yet. His reg dr called today and he's supposed to call them back. It will probably be scheduled for one of his days off next week when he has time to do it.

I've seen the MRI machines before on TV I just wasn't sure what happened inside. The tube kinda reminds me of Spock's coffin when he dies and they shove his pointy eared butt out into space in Star Trek II:Wrath of Khan (I think it's in WOK..anyway...).

I think we both really got freaked out because he's had bad headaches before but this was the worst he's ever had. He seemed (to me anyway)a bit light sensitive and in a heck of a lot of pain. :( I hope they can figure out what this is with the MRI. I'm really worried for him.

Light sensitivity and vomiting sound like it could be migraines. Also, ask your Dr about cluster headaches, as they are much more common in men. They are related to migraines but can last for days or even weeks.
Good luck. MRIs are nothing to be scared of, no injections, no radioactive dyes, just lay in a tube for a bit. If your DH is even the tiniest bit claustrophobic, ask the dr for a sedative though!

I sure hope it is nothing more seriouse than migraines. I understand there are some good medications for them on the market these days. Good luck and PD to your DH.
