Overweight and DCL?

New to the boards and about to be a first time cruiser. My family and I (except hubby-he will be in school) will be on the 3/27 Magic/western cruise, and I am also overweight...haven't lost any for the cruise, nor will I have by March. The only concern I had was about a couple of excursions. I have since found out they will be no problem. I will have a blast on the cruise and bet you will also!! Think less about it, and more about the sun, sea and sky. What memories you will be making!
Do you have children going?
Hope to see you on a cruise sometime...
RELAX AND ENJOY!!

ps. I bet you have asked the question so many were thinking.

What a reassuring thread!

I would like to ask a question of kcashner, though -- I hate to ask something too personal, but did you have weight loss surgery?

I had weight loss surgery 6.5 months ago and I'm down about 90 pounds now. :Pinkbounc But I like to eat OFTEN because I can't eat that much at one sitting.

Did you have any special requests or any tips you could pass along (if indeed that is the case?)

I didn't have the RnY but the Duodenal Switch, which means I can eat a "small adult" or child sized portion.

Thanks for any help! (And the reassurances from everyone else!)

Sherri :)
(only 50 more pounds to go!)

Wow - I didn't realize how many people had the same issues I had. As I sit here in tears because I want to loose weight so much and just can't stay focussed enough to do it!! Whe I got married in 1990 I weighed 150 lbs, I'm 5'5" and could carry it well and it wasn't an issue, but I felt big then!!! Didn't help the 1990's wedding dresses (big and puffy!!) After I had my daughter in 1992, I gained 70 lbs!,(went to hell and back in between trying to have a second child, that's a whole nother issue) had my son in 1999 and gained 20 but lost it right away, so I have been stuck at 220 for ever!! I tried weight watchers, walking, exercise, I think I have had memberships in every gym in the area!!! Then they put all these extreme makeover shows on TV, gee lets really make people feel even worse about themselves! Anyway, guess I'm venting here! But tomorrow I'm going to go check out our local Curves and see if its something I can stick with. Who knows maybe by August I could be one of those "hard bodies!!!"

ClarabelleCow............... my DW swears by Curves. They recommend that you go 3 times per week, approx. 30 minutes per session. Any more than that, and you can actually gain weight because you build muscle mass. Going to Curves and doing the South Beach diet, she is doing great!

Best of luck...................

BUT....GO....and you'll find out that DCL has selectively picked out the fit ones for their advertisements.... :)

Watch According To Jim tonight-- that is the premise for the show!
They want to use his pretty wife and cute kids in a DCL ad but they want to replace (plump) Jim with a handsome buff actor.
30 lbs. is a big accomplishment- Allow yourself a few treats on board and then back to business when you get home!

I'm still looking for the hard-bodied people who're in the DCL brochures. After two cruises, I haven't found them yet!

What I do see, though, are many people who look like DH and I, starting to show a little bit of a belly, (not having time to exercise as much as we used to when single, and before kids,) but smiling and enjoying the time of their lives w/their families.

We feel most comfortable here!::yes::

Hi everyone,
This thread caught my eye. You all probably already know, but here's just a little advertisement for the WISH board on the DIS. The people there are wonderful, and all are working to lose those extra pounds, get healthy, and stay healthy once they have reached their goals. I joined a year ago but really didn't take advantage of their support until a couple weeks ago, when I decided to get serious about feeling better. Anyway, it's been a great help to stay on track and exercise, or get support to begin a better way of living. If you haven't looked over the board, give it a try. :sunny:

PS: 30 lbs is a really great weight loss IMHO ::yes::

To the above post, I just wanted to let you know that 30 pounds of muscle is 30 pounds and 30 pounds of fat is 30 pounds. Muscle does not weigh more than fat. It is denser (more compact) than fat which means if you have 30 pounds of muscle you will look leaner than if 30 pounds of fat. Also, the more muscle you have on your body, the faster you can burn calories when sitting watching television. IT is a myth that when you gain muscle you gain weight. 30 pounds is 30 pounds..whether it be muscle of fat.

I say go and have a great time. Your weight should not determine your self-worth. Forget about the outside and think about your qualities inside....your kindness, your sense-of-humor, your ability to love others, your intelligence. If you don't have any of those things, then I would worry!

;)

It's a pity that we all suffer from the "model" syndrome - we all think that if we don't look perfect, we will be less than the person we are.

Baloney!!

Look inward at your value as a human being and if you aren't on the cover of Sports Illustrated, you are probably just like 99% of those of us who cruise - just plain great people!!!

I agree completely........... however, if you gain muscle and do not lose fat, you will gain weight.

Rae....... I couldn't have said it any better.

I understand how you feel, but there will come a time in all our lives when we realize that we aren't all beautiful bodies but beautiful souls. I have said it before and I'll say it again, we needed our bodies a little larger then others to hold all the love and compassion we feel in our hearts for others.

I thought I would lose more before our cruise in May and I haven't. I am going to buy some new clothes that look good on my old body and just relax and enjoy my cruise. If someone is looking at me thinking wow she is fat, I feel sorry for them because they can't see beyond that and look for the positive. I like to think of my stomach as half full instead of half empty!! : ) Lynn

I am so glad someone else has these concerns and not just me...

sounds like there wont be any problems....

I will be one of thoes "over weight" moms sitting by the pool...

OK! First let me say I am disapointed!!.....after reading all your comments, I went to the dvd of Disney cruise and checked out the "buffed guys" (I am a teacher and am stuck in a room all day...I could use some buffed guys at this moment). I have to say...I found none to my taste (ok..there was one!!:) ).

Now, let me say that we are real people who come in all shapes and sizes. Just the fact that I found all of your comments interesting and true, means that I would love to sit down with you at the pool and feel comfortable regardless of your shape or size.

lapinluv-- Go, enjoy. Feel good that you are on the DCL and having fun. You will meet wonderful people and they will be honored to meet you.

Celebrate the 30 lbs lost. Have you checked out the WISH board? they are great over there and have provided me with a lot of support.....Lee:sunny:
