Booked my reservation in July at my fave resort...POR. stayed at Deluxes but always seem to have the best time at POR. I got a call yesterday saying there was an "inventory discrepancy " and offered me an upgrade to Riviera. I was reluctant, but after some haggling I got a 2 bedroom villa, rack rate about $1650 per night, plus some very nice additional compensation. How often does this happen? In 2011 I was upgraded from Pop Century to OKW villa...

I keep hearing stories about these magical upgrades, but they have yet to happen to me lol. Hopefully one day because that's the only way I'll ever get to stay at a moderate or deluxe resort. I'd love to try a moderate, but my husband doesn't think it makes sense since we're rarely even at the resort, which he isn't totally wrong, but I have a whole bucket list of places I'd love to stay!

As an aside, DVC Rentals are a good way to get a deluxe villa at a price similar to a moderate. Something to consider for that bucket list

In 2007 we were supposed to stay at POR and when we went to check in they said they were overbooked and upgraded us to WL. We fell completely in love with WL and haven't stayed anywhere else since then :upsidedow

Not so nice as your upgrade, but I got a call to upgrade from Pop Century to Coronado Springs for my upcoming 1 night stay in February.... It doesn't really matter for us either way, just needed a place to stay before moving to Bay Lake Tower the next day.

Not often. My guess is there's either a refurbishment scheduled or a large group block that they need to clear inventory for. Sometimes people can be ugraded the day before or the day of due to extenuating circumstances, but these cases only occur when the resort is in a bind.

Never a different resort upgrade. We did upgraded to concierge at CR once. Didn't even know about it until we got to the floor. We checked in and were told our room number and went with it. We were so surprised when we got to the floor and it were greeted with a concierge cast member. Frankly, it made us realize we really wouldn't pay for concierge after that since the only thing we used was the breakfast. We were never at the resort during the times the snacks were set out. We have been upgraded to a "better" view a time or two. I always just book standard view and have been given a water or garden view a few times. Once got lucky and got a great room at YC with a view of the BW.

As far as the suggestion to rent points, that tends to be only a good option if you are going for a one or two bedroom, if you are going for a studio, it's often less to either get a discounted rate on a regular room.

I've thought about that. Will have to look more into it before I book our next trip.
We also love renting DVC. It's the only way we can afford to stay deluxe. For our upcoming stay we got a studio at AKV for less than rack rate for a moderate. Another consideration if you drive or rent a car is that you get free parking staying on points, so in our case we save another $25 a day. There are some drawbacks though. The biggest one is that for the most popular resorts you will need to book as much as 11 months out, and you cannot modify or cancel a reservation once it is made. But if you are sure of your dates its a great way to save on some really nice rooms.

That's an AMAZING upgrade! The Rivera resorts looks beautiful. We are having dinner at Topolino's on our upcoming trip to check it out. I hope to stay there at some point!

Congrats - enjoy your stay. Years ago we used to read on Dis from people who’d booked a value (most often the very popular Pop) being moved to usually SSR due to overbooking, but not so much lately. We had dinner at Topolino’s Terrace a couple of weeks ago and the Riviera seemed nice - although it’s a tower resort v. POR’s spread out grounds. It’s certainly convenient to Epcot & DHS w/ the Skyliner right there. I’m sure the 2 br. villa will feel very spacious compared to a room at POR.
Re; renting DVC points, when I ran the numbers years ago it was usually cheaper to rent a studio & 1 br.s were pretty expensive to rent because they take so many points. Whether renting DVC is cheaper really depends on time of year, resort, view, and size villa booked v. current discounts Disney is offering I think.

Not very often. I guess you are blessed.

That's a great upgrade but the DFB says rack is not worth the cost, so go, enjoy and get us a report. I hear Top is awesome
