More than 300 passengers and cruise members aboard a Ruby Princess cruise ship voyage have fallen ill, resulting in an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Out of the 2,881 passengers on the cruise, the CDC shared in a news release, 284 became ill, along with 34 of its 1,159 crew members. Vessel Sanitation Program epidemiologists and environmental health officers conducted a field response on Sunday after it docked in Galveston, Texas.

After their initial investigation, predominant symptoms among the ill were discovered to include vomiting and diarrhea.

While it is unknown when the first case was reported, the CDC shared that the voyage began on Feb. 26 and that the cases that have been reported account for the entire cruise trip.

"At the first sign of an increase in the numbers of passengers reporting to the medical center with gastrointestinal illness, we immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitization procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus," a representative from Princess Cruises, the company that operates the ship, tells PEOPLE in a statement.

An investigation has begun into the cause behind the outbreak, along with preliminary response measures that include the collection of stool samples from the sickened passengers and crew members for pathogenic examination.

In response to the outbreak, the Princess Cruises representative adds that the company disinfected high-touch surfaces like railings, door handles, and elevator buttons and encouraged sickened passengers to isolate in their cabins.

Passengers were also provided "regular verbal and written communication about steps they can take to stay well while onboard," the company adds in their statement to PEOPLE, sharing that they believe the outbreak was likely caused by the "common but contagious virus called Norovirus."

The CDC shares on its website that "norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea."

While the CDC adds that you can get norovirus from an infected person, from contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces, close living quarters found on cruise ships increase the potential for the illness.

"As an additional precaution, the ship underwent an additional disinfection on March 5 in Galveston ahead of its next departure," Princess Cruises adds in their statement to PEOPLE. "The ship is now on a seven-day western Caribbean cruise, returning to Galveston on March 12."

Norovirus is circulating like crazy on the mainland right now, I know at least five people who currently have it, so I'm not surprised that it might have migrated onto a cruise ship. :/

While of course we are going to be vigilant with handwriting, I've got a granddaughter who won't keep her fingers out of her mouth! So I worry about that. Any insight on the germstar® one hand sanitizer? It claims to be "developed for cruisers" and effective against norovirus. I've been looking for something to use in between handwashing, especially if getting a snack etc

I did buy that for our next cruise. Figured it couldn’t hurt. lol I have never used it before though. We travel in May. We always wash before meals and as we enter our room (and of course after restroom breaks).

The FDA has already issued a warning letter to the manufacturers of Germstar Noro/One. From the letter

Furthermore, we are not aware of evidence to show that Germstar Hand Sanitizer products as formulated and labeled are generally recognized by qualified experts as safe and effective for their labeled uses.

Just fair warning. Frequent handwashing is still your best bet against Norovirus

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that several areas in the US and Canada had large breakouts of Noro and I felt it would only be a short time before it hit the ships again. (My comment was deleted, and chastise as making things up, ugh It was on national news.)

The part that bugs me, is now all of those people who call cruising petri dishes. I just want to bop them in the head with a wet newspaper.

My mom called Cruise Ships Petri Dishes long before this

We all know it's a common refrain. And it's one of the reasons that I prefer DCL. Cleanest ships in the industry.

From today's Washington Post article

Not sure it migrated to cruise ships. It has been common on cruise ships for decades. There was an outbreak on the Magic in 2003. No masks like covid, but on our December 2003 cruise they had staff outside each dining facility with hand sanitizer and we got notices in our rooms to make sure to wash your hands a lot.

Trouble is it is not always convenient and not always easy to stay "sterile" from bathroom to dinner table, for example - ship's a bit rocky and you grab a handrail on the way to your table - you are now doomed LOL.

We will probably bring something like these wipes on our next trip for those times when sinks aren't available:

use health-care-grade bleach wipes, such as Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Wipes, which are hard to find in stores but are sold on websites like Amazon. Let the bleach sit on the surface for at least five minutes, ideally 10, because it takes time to kill these resilient jerks. Hydrogen peroxide cleaners are another effective option.

All true. My point was only that the solution being recommended shouldn't be trusted.

We've done 6 cruises on three different cruise lines in the past 18 months and caught nothing. We're in our 70s.
that's great I caught a cold or something ins 2015, nothing else in 29 cruises, but vertigo in 2018, but that's a long story and not totally the cruise if you want to hear more I will tell you about that.

Mom thought they were petri dish's in 2013, she doesn't complain that we go, just won't go herself with that and titanic thoughts

The Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Wipes are intended for use on various types of hard, nonporous surfaces, not for use on humans -- they are not hand wipes. They contain a 1:10 dilution of bleach. From Clorox' technical information document for the product:
"CAUTION: Liquid causes moderate eye irritation. Do not get in eyes or on clothing.
Avoid contact with clothing. Wear protective eyewear. Wash thoroughly with soap and
water after handling and before eating, drinking, chewing gum, using tobacco or using
the toilet. For sensitive skin or prolonged use, wear gloves."

Alcohol is rated better than bleach for killing viruses so hand sanitizer is a much better approach as long as it is over 60% alcohol. Use it right before you sit down.

70% Alcohol is #1, Quaternary Ammonium is # 2, Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach) is #3 and Hydrogen Peroxide is #4

For noro too? The article says the only two things shown to be effective are hydrogen peroxide and bleach.

I based that on viruses in general so I just did a web search and this is from the CDC's site. Bleach must sit for 5 minutes and that is for solid surfaces. For your hands washing them is the only true method....

Hand sanitizer does not work well against norovirus. Handwashing is always best. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You can use hand sanitizers in addition to hand washing, but hand sanitizer is not a substitute for washing your hands with warm water and soap.

Leave the bleach disinfectant on the affected area for at least five minutes, then clean the entire area again with soap and hot wate
r.

Edit: Probably why sanitizers don't work is the alcohol evaporates too fast since eveything you read says the disinfectants have to sit.
