so I'm flipping through the channels the other day, when I see that one of the sports channels is showing professional bowling...but the lanes are set up outside, in an amusement park?

Why?:confused3

Who asked for this? :confused3

Why is this necessary? :confused3

hahaha... I'm guessing that having it outdoors would be a way to spice things up a bit and make the sport more interesting to watch?

Our kids saw that too and thought it was pretty neat. I'm guessing that an outdoor lane was the quickest/cheapest way for the park to host the event.

It's also probably the first professional bowling event where the participants had to factor in cross-winds!

GREAT point on the wind ... ha-ha!

I don't know
I don't know
No, its not necessary but neither is arena football, or indoor monster truck shows.

I can understand your questions, but it does sound like fun.

However, I noticed your thread title included the "mad" smiley. Did it actually anger you to see this?

The PBA tour switched to "outside" (hotels) and true outside (amusement park) venues to spark interest in viewership when ratings were down years ago. The bowlers wear microphones now too, so you hear can their comments and they are encouraged to show some emotion, all in the name of TV rating.

is this better? ;)

and to the above posters...it does NOT :sad2: make it more fun to watch...it made me ask these questions...

Well I can say this as I dont tell to many people. My husband is a pro bowler, however he has not bowled for quite a while. He wants to move on to golfing maybe pro. Still not sure, but the bowling sport has dropped quite a bit and they need to do different things to try to reinterest people. The money to be made is good. He never liked it when the camera man would stand directly on his shoulder while trying to bowl.

They were real bowling lanes with the ball return, pin setters machine, little hand dryer/blower, old wrinkled woman name Rose, who speaks in a raspy voice from smoking two packs a day for 30 years, in a pink nylon bowling shirt standing by the juke box playing a Hank Williams song....(when I was a little tyke, my mom bowled in a league...so I know of what I speak :thumbsup2)

It was like a bowling alley except outside.

usnuzuloose...I started to post something earlier, because I thought "what are the chances there is a pro bowler on the Community Board"...so I held my pen (or I guess I should have said "pin")...

Toad...when I first selected the mad face I actually paused before I selected it, what I wanted was a puzzled face like this :confused3...but was not an option...

ABC seems to think it is on its way back. I read that they plan on broadcasting some matches next year. Personally, I love bowling, and the amusement parks have been done for a few years now. Also love the skills matches they do from time to time. Very fun.

As to the OP: you sound like you don't like bowling to begin with. Personally, I can't stand golf except for the Skins matches, but I don't really care why they do them.

Well Its okay for spelling, I was :lmao:. I have never bowled with my husband. Not a chance I would feel strange. Not sure if he would go back to doing it but ya never know. He really enjoys golf. Him and his dad are just very gifted in the sports area. Hope bowling does make a come back. Jo

Well, there's always bocce. Where I live the popularity is about evenly split between bocce (normally outdoors) and indoor conventional bowling. They are even building bocce courts at popular bars now; go figure.

Like a lot of mid-century things, bowling has just enough geek-cred to be cool again, and now that so many places have been enacting no-smoking ordinances, those of us who have been avoiding it for years for that reason are more open to trying it again. It's a fun pastime.

I like actually bowling...although the rental shoes do scare me :scared1:...I just don't like WATCHING bowling on TV.

Most of the guys look like they need to get out in the sun more...and they all look "greasy"...must be from all the oil on the lanes...kind of like a cross between a used car salesman and a chiropractor....(have I offended everyone yet? ;)...yes I do know that I'm making broad statements based on general stereotypes...if you're offended, I'm truly sorry......)

Last time I bowled, I think I scored in the 180's...and I only bowl about once every three years.

I recall a bit David Letterman did many years ago on the Tonight Show...he said he went bowling, went to get the shoes...was told he had to pay for them...he asked why..."to prevent theft".

David said..."now lets stop and think about this...is there really a big problem with people stealing used red and green shoes with a big 11 on the back?"

Easy, it is fun to watch. The pro's bowling are having fun. It is cool to watch your favorite player bowling in a relax setting. Loved that team Brunswick had a female and a senior tour bowler in their line-up. Those with a good understanding of bowling realize that the conditions to bowling outside are difficult.
