Hi all,

I was just wondering what do the candy manufactures do with seconds? You know, the ones that aren't the perfect shape/color/flavor what have you.:confused3 :confused3

Do they sell them at an outlet type store? Do they just throw them out? I was just at a local store and saw some fruit slices that said "irregular" on them, so this got me wondering. The only thing wrong with them was their shape as far as I could tell.

We have a lindt factory store near us that sells seconds and also a russell stover factory store. YUMMY!!!!!

I think they sell them one way or the other, as long as it's just a minor problem. Jelly Belly sells BellyFlops, which are seconds. I live near a Russel Stover seconds store -- lots of cheap candy that tastes just as good as the stuff they sell in other stores. I would guess other candy manufacturers do the same too.

my mother-in-law alwasy goes to the russel stover outlet, but we have opened some that you could tell was old...the chocolate was faded and cracked and it tasted old....we just thru it away (my husband didn't want to hurt her feelings)

We live near a Godiva factory outlet. Its not seconds but I think over runs or things nearing their best buy date ( you can find easter things like the day after easter, etc.). It is generally half off the retail price so its a great deal! They also sell their cookies and coffee and cocoa.

The Pepperidge Farm outlets have Godiva overstocks. Once or twice a year they have a big clearance sale on their website too.
Near me we also have the Necco factory, Necco wafers, SkyBars, all that good old stuff.

I have relatives who live near the Bahlsen cookie factory; they have a card and can enter a few times a year to stock up on seconds and 'test' items. They used to fill the trunk of my car with cookies.

And I used to have an 'in' to the Miele test kitchen, where they bake and cook all day long, testing the products ;)

In Canada, Purdy's chocolates will often sell 'not quite perfect' items for a small discount

The Jelly Belly people sell factory seconds they are called "Belly Flops'.
I am going to California next week and plan on bring home around 25 LBS of them for gifts. Everyone here loves them.

There is a Pepperidge Farm outlet in the Gettysburg Outlets, for anyone who is near there.

The Russell Stover outlet near me sells seconds, but most of the time they cost the same as if you found a Buy 1 Get 1 Free or 1/2 price sale on normal boxes.

check the prices at the factory (fairfield) before you buy them at the outlet (vacaville). often the factory is running a better much better deal than the outlet (like buy one bag, get the second for a penny). also-even if they don't have them on the sales floor-if you are buying that large an amount, you can ask for them in one of the sealed boxes-they come in boxes that they cut open for the bins on the floor and they will sell them to you that way which is much easier for travel (a dozen bags in a box).

can you tell we used to live right down the road from them?:)

p.s.-give their chocolate products a try-their giant smore is awsome.

Oh that sounds good thanks for the advice. I plan on taking the factory tour.
Jelly Bellies are my favorite candy. I will try the smore too.

When I was a little girl, my sister and I always bought a big bag of "Goo Goo Rejects" at the bread store. They were oddly shaped or had caramel poking out or some kind of mistake. Yum! I wonder if anyone still sells those. I haven't seen them in a long time.

I've never seen the rejects, but there is nothing like a fresh GooGoo Cluster.mmmm

I need to find these!!!! I picked up a few boxes when we drove back from WDW back in March and we stopped at JR's for the first time in my life. The people at work that I got them for simply devoured them and I can't find them any other place except online and I don't want to order them from online!

Try Walgreen's. Even "way up here" we can get GooGoo's at Walgreen's!

I think I've seen them at Target. Our local Target has a pretty decent selection of "vintage" type candy...or at least it did at Christmas time. Maybe it's seasonal--I haven't been down the candy aisle in a while.

Actually, I stand corrected. I checked on walgreens.com and there are a few within an hour of me (not that I'm driving an hour for GooGoos, but next time I'm in the direction, I'll check).
