Hatteras Island-described as further south of Nags Head-is gorgeous. Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo homes have some excellent ocean and sound views. The full size grocery is in Avon-about 20 minutes south of Salvo. Avon is a larger village with lots of restaurants, shops and rental homes to choose from. The water is never far away on the island as it is very narrow. There are great water activities on both sides-sound for fishing, kayaking, crabbing and shrimping or just watching the kite surfing. Ocean for all the things known to you. There is even a Dollar Store and movie theater in Avon!! No 'fast food' or chain restaurants though. Go further south and you come to Buxton-home of the famous Hatteras Lighthouse as well as more gorgeous scenery sound and ocean side and great beaches, Connors market, great restaurants-Apple Uglies and a lively albeit small nightlife. From Buxton, you come to the sleepy village of Frisco with some of most fabulous beach on the whole island, a small airport, one of many nice campgrounds on the island, a Native American Museum, the dentist and clinic, many small shops and restaurants and many great rental homes. Last-not least by any stretch, Hatteras Village. The village has dozens of wondrous rentals, lots of oceanfront property, Shipwreck Museum, several harbors filled with lovely big boats and lots and lots of small but good restaurants, coffee shops, a modest but nice shopping boardwalk at the ferry terminal where one can get a free ferry about every half hour to Ocracoke island-one of my favorite places to visit or vacation. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a main inhabitant of Hatteras Island and run by the National Park Service. They, the NPS, have lots of summer, family friendly programs on both islands-Hatteras and Ocracoke-that cover things like pirate folklore, surf fishing lessons, seining the sound for critters and beachfire stories withing sight of the famous aforementioned Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
