Outdoor chores, what did you have to do?

As soon as I was old enough I had to cut and trim the lawn. My parents quickly realized that I did a better job at it then my brothers (they just raced through it), so that was my main summer chore. If my father was feeling a bit grouchy, I ended up weeding the garden. No money changed hands.

My brothers had to dig out dandelions every weekend. We had a fairly large backyard, so this was a time consuming task. The upside, they got PAID!! A penny a dandelion! They were very good at keeping track of how many they had accumulated.

What outdoor chores did you have to do? Did you get paid, or was this included in your allowance?

I was the helper. I couldn't wait til I was old enough to use the mower. (I thought it was so neat.....I know, dumb kid!) When Dad would mow, I'd follow right behind him every step of the way....all around the yard. I think I was 12 when he let me do it myself....on occasion.

I didn't get paid. That's what laundry and kitchen duty were for....

I was the fifth of seven. First, my two oldest brothers had lawn mowing duty but the second one quickly learned from the first to do crappy job and the job would get passed on down to the next in line. I don't recall my oldest sister ever mowing the lawn but the one right before me did and I did too. But I enjoyed doing it.

That's really as far as it went as far as outside chores.

The boys and Dad did snow removal duty. Dad had a garden for a number of years but it was HIS garden.

Nope, not much outside chores -- oh except for washing the car --and no extra pay for same.

Now inside jobs... that's a different story.....

Oh just remember - one summer Dad took down all the leaders and gutters from the house and we all had to scrape them. I guess he repainted them and rehung them. I was real little then, maybe about 6 or 7.
