Well, we’re back from our 4-night cruise on the Disney Wonder (April 27 – May 1). It was our very first cruise and, as explained below, will probably be our very last cruise as well.

We drove down to Port Canaveral on Saturday, Apr 26 and checked into the Radisson Resort at the Port. We had booked a regular room, but were upgraded for free to a suite with a whirlpool tub. It was nice.

Sunday morning, we take the free shuttle to the DCL terminal. Since we go there a bit early, we had to wait a few minutes. We left our baggage and proceeded to security. We were the first ones to check in.

We get onboard and eat a nice lunch at Parrot Cay. Our Category 5 Deluxe Stateroom with Verandah was ready at 1:30 (Stateroom #7568). Although much smaller than a DVC Studio, it was nicer and roomier than we expected.

Viruses seem to get a lot of attention when it comes to cruising, as there are warnings posted in your stateroom about frequently washing your hands, and disinfecting wipes are handed to every guest as they enter the dining areas, and are available almost everywhere. We were given a “Stomach Flu Advisory” when we checked in. I read that getting a virus happens to about 1-2% of the guests on every cruise, so we both used disinfectant wipes.

My wife, who experiences motion sickness a lot (she got really sick on Soarin’), took Bonine (Meclizine) and also wore the Scopolamine transdermal patch, and did very well.

Our dining rotation was PTTA (Parrot Cay, Triton’s twice, and Animator’s Palate) – second dining (8:30pm). We had booked reservations for Palo on the night we were to repeat Triton’s, and brunch at Palo on the sea day.

We had scheduled a Couples Cabana Massage on Castaway Cay and the Elemis Aroma Stone massage for both of us at the Vista Spa.

We were excited and looking forward to a romantic and relaxing cruise!

At 1:00 pm on Monday (the second day of the cruise), my wife became very ill. The symptoms, which included vomiting and diarrhea, came upon her very quickly. She became very weak and needed fluids.

We contacted the onboard Medical Center as directed by the “Stomach Flu Advisory” form and they asked her to come down. She was finally strong enough to make her way down to deck 1 around 4:30pm. They gave her an IV and medication to treat her symptoms.

They then informed us that my wife was restricted to her stateroom for 48 hours (not from when she first became ill, but when she came to the Medical Center). That meant she would be stuck in her stateroom until the night before we disembark the ship – practically the entire cruise.

She missed dining at Triton’s and Animator’s Palate. She missed visiting Castaway Cay (which is what she was looking forward to the most) and the Couples Cabana Massage. She missed brunch at Palos. She missed all the nightly shows. She missed the Pirates IN the Caribbean party. She missed almost everything.

We were able to re-schedule her massage at the Vista Spa and dinner at Palo to the last night of the cruise, and those two things were all she was able to do when she was released from our stateroom at 5pm on Wednesday night.

So, our cruise was a bust. I didn’t have very much fun on my own, especially since I didn’t want to leave my wife alone in her stateroom for the entire cruise. I did step out to catch the shows in the Walt Disney Theater, and did get off at Castaway Cay for a while.

She had to order room service for every meal, and they kept botching her meals by “forgetting” her food allergies (Celiac’s/gluten, soy, etc) and preferences (vegetarian). It wasn’t at all like the fantastic way Walt Disney World handles people with food allergies.

We paid extra for the “Romantic Escape” package, but DCL botched that as well. They did the Romantic Turndown service (rose petals on the bed) the first night my wife was sick. The Champagne Breakfast was also botched, as my wife’s plate of eggs was covered with bread and bacon – making it inedible for her.

Disney Cruise Line didn’t do much for us, and didn’t offer us any compensation or credit for our misery. I know it’s not their fault that my wife caught a virus onboard their ship, but they could have at least offered to credit us for the Romantic Escape package.

Both of us were disappointed by our Disney Cruise Line experience. Not only will we not recommend DCL to others, we won’t be doing any more cruises in the future (Disney or otherwise).

After our cruise, we went to WDW where we enjoyed three great nights in a Boardwalk View room at BWV. We had a great time at WDW!

The DVC guide on the cruise heard about my wife’s illness, and DVC had four of those DVC fast passes waiting for us when we checked in at BWV. We both rode Splash Mountain (her favorite ride) 7 times in a row with no waiting!

I am so sorry that your trip wasn't what you hoped for!

Hopefully time will ease some of your disappointment and you'll give DCL another chance to show you it's magic. In 7 cruises we've only had fantastic experiences.

DVC Mike:

So sorry to hear about your wife's illness on your cruise. We have been on three Disney cruises and have had wonderful times with groups of friends with no illness. It is stories like yours that make me extremely intimidated to try our luck again. I can't imagine how disappointed both you and your wife were.

I am glad you had a nice time at the BWV. We too are DVC members and are beginning to think we should stick with Disney for our family rather then the cruise. At least when you have one of the DVC one or two bedroom units if someone is ill, which does happen sometime when on vacation, there is plenty of room for everyone. Disney is also a great place to relax and enjoy even if something unexpected comes up. Also with all the other issues that can come up on the cruise that we read about on the boards; bad seas, seasickness, not getting into ports, not getting into Castaway Cay, etc., I am just not sure it is worth the risk considering the expense of a Disney Cruise. We are booked for next year on DCL and we have second thoughts everyday.

I hope you continue to have wonderful stays at Disney/DVC. Thank you for sharing your DCL experience with us.

Oh Mike. I am so sorry it was so disappointing for you and the Mrs. Mike.

Our first DCL cruise had extremely rough weather. My poor husband spent about 1/2 of a 7 day cruise in bed, sick (sea).
We both felt so bad that our first cruise was a wash that we really wanted to tackle that horse and get back on. That was 4 cruises ago and we have our 5th coming up in a few months (same cabin, 7568, by the way, but Magic). I guess all I am trying to say is that all cruises are not bad. Maybe give another cruise line a chance. We also cruise Celebrity, which we like as much as DCL.:goodvibes

PS Did you take out travel insurance? They might refund you some of the cost.
And I am surprised that DCL didn't treat you very well. You are a nice guy, that shouldn't happen to you!

So sorry to hear about the problems with your cruise. Next May, my DH , myself, and DS are taking a 3-nite cruise. It will be the first time ever for all of us. But your experience is why I only want to try the 3 nite first. I too get motion sickness....want to see how that works out. Do you think she actually got the Norwalk virus or was it motion sickness? They say the first night is rough going over different waters. Glad to hear you had a great experience with BWV!! We loved our time there (we went 4/19-4/26). It was just as you said....clean! New carpet, just no issues!! Hope your wife is feeling better!:flower3:

Mike, so sorry your DW got sick and wasn't able to partake of the cruise.
What a terrible turn of events.

Glad you were able to have some fun at WDW.

Deb

Do you think she actually got the Norwalk virus or was it motion sickness?

It was definitely a gastrointestinal virus and not motion sickness. On the last night, when she was finally released from the stateroom, we had dinner in Palo (the back of the ship), and there was a lot of motion going on and she didn't get motion sickness. The Bonine really worked great!

what a shame/disappointment for you:sad2:

rather scary to read that they kept serving your wife food that she was allergic to despite notification.

Know that it is common practice to confine possibly contagious passengers to quarters for safety of crew/passengers, can't really argue with that rational:confused3

fyi, i developed a "massive infection" resulting from a bug bite while on excursion in rain forest (or so it was diagnosed by ships' dr on cruise last Dec. on the Legend). I wasn't quarantiened thou - guess i wasn't "catchy"? I was able to document the expenses (ridiculous amt of $ charged to our on-board account since i had purchased CSA in lieu of Carnival's offereing:mad: ). I was reimbursed within a month or so:thumbsup2

Yes, I did purchase the travel insurance and will be contacting them to see what, if anything, it wll cover.

Oh I am so glad you had travel insurance! They should reimburse you for your wife's portion of the cruise that she missed. I have read many posts where the travel insurance covered this very thing. This is why for cruising we will always get travel insurance.

I am sorry this happened to you and your wife. Glad you enjoyed WDW!

I'm so sorry that your wife became ill and missed almost the whole cruise!

On our last cruise, both our sons got sick with some gastro type bug. My husband missed St. Thomas to stay on board with ds11. We called and reported that he was sick, but nobody seemed to be real upset about it.

He was better the next day, but the next night ds15 had it awful, and had messed up the bed -- we had gone to a late movie showing. We called down and within minutes a team was sent up to replace the bed covers and empty the trash. We felt really bad calling so late, but they were really nice. And the next day he was better. We didn't call about him since they weren't upset about my youngest. Neither my husband nor I caught it.

The funny thing was that room service called and asked about the youngest son. I had mentioned he wasn't feeling well when I ordered his lunch.

Man, that's awful. I sure am sorry. I read reports like this and I feel like I'm getting survivor's guilt, or something. It doesn't really seem fair that one set of folks have absolutely stellar experiences, and others just marinate in seagoing misery.

I wonder how other cruise lines handle these same sorts of issues?

Our stateroom host informed us (after we had already visited the Medical Center) that he advises guests who get sick to not notify Disney, but to order Gatoraide and other liquids and to stay in their stateroom until they feel better -- to avoid the 48-hour restriction. I guess enough guests get quarantined in their staterooms for him to suggest this.

I'm so sorry your experience was so awful. I am also glad your DW is doing better. Take the time to contact the trip insurance provider, you should see some of the expense back.

Dvc Mike,

I am so sorry your wife got sick. The same thing happened to my DSIL's family a few years ago. Her DS15 at the time had the exact same symptoms, went to medical, received the same treatment as your DW and was quarantined to his room for 48 hours. My DSIL also purchased the insurance and was reimbursed for part of the cruise. From what I remember, she also contacted DCL, explained the situation and that her DS obviously caught this on the ship (there had been an outbreak on the ship). DCL gave her a credit for 1/2 of 2 out of 3 people for another cruise. She went again 8 months later. I would definitely contact your insurance and DCL. We had a Disney cruise booked for the summer after DSIL went and my DH refused to go after hearing about the outbreak on DSIL's cruise. DH finally gave in and we have gone on 2 over the past year and LOVE them. We were on the 4 night April 20th cruise, a week before yours. My DD5 and I both caught Strep Throat. Good Luck!

I'm very sorry to hear about your experience. It is however very nice that you reported the Gatorade remedy, you could have just blown it off and let others fend for themselves. Kudos for that! Be interested in what happens with the insurance if you don't mind.

So sorry to hear about your wife's illness on the cruise. Same thing happened to us on our first 7 night DCL cruise. My son became ill on the first full day of the cruise (Key West) and was quarantined for 3 days. It was a miserable experience for him and for us.

We had the DCL travel insurance (Access America). Thank goodness! We received a major refund (almost worth have of our cruise fare) not only for my son, but for my husband and I as well. Hope your coverage works as well for you.

I wonder when the cruise lines will figure out that the reason people get sick is because some people don't report their illness. They've heard about what the ship will do and they don't want to be stuck in their room like your wife was. They just don't tell anyone and go about their business...touching things...breathing on things...etc. Then the next person comes along and touches it too and SHAZAM!!! That person gets sick.

I contacted Access America (the company that provides the insurance for Disney Cruise Lines) and they stated that the insurance does not cover this particular situation. If my wife had been so ill that she had to be transported off the ship and flown home, that would have been covered. But since she remained on the cruise ship -- and even though she was restricted to her stateroom and unable to fully participate in the cruise -- the cruise insurance provided by Disney won't cover a thing.

This just confirms our decision to not take any future cruises. There's simply too much risk that your time and money will go down the drain if you catch a bug.

My next step is to write Disney Cruise Line and see what they say. I'm not very hopeful.
