Our Tips from 5 Days in July

1. The Velocicoaater tumbler-style freestyle cups look cool but shatter when your child drops them, they fall out of a locker, some person walking by knocks them out of your hand etc. Would recommend the normal freestyle mugs over these. We lost 2 of the tumblers in 5 days from drops.

2. Avoid counter service as much as you can until things improve. If you have to do counter service make sure you eat before 6pm or places will close or run out.

3. We found 1-2 freestyle cups were enough for a family of 4 taking turns. Your mileage will vary. We also filled up before doing table service and saved by just ordering water instead of fountain drinks at $3.99 each.

4. Velocicoaster moves fast and the line was shorter than listed each time. Get in line early or wait until 11:30am. You can ask for the front and it’s worth it. Make sure you sit back and push the bar down hard. I felt less secured on this than other rides for some reason.

5. Use virtual queue for Hagrid - lines are shorter when it’s active and things move. It’s worth riding both day and night.

6. Annual Passes were awesome but benefits were confusing. You can early entry Islands with Premier only but you can early entry Studios with Preferred and Premier. If we knew I would have paid for premier. The website isn’t very clear on this. You also get express unlimited after 4pm with premier - so it might be worth it to just do premier AP rather than staying on-site especially if you’re doing more than 1 trip.

7. Present your annual pass everywhere if you have it. Discounts add up. Even on freestyle activations (which were $10 per day not $5 like I read somewhere).

8. Smile and be positive. It was hard when we saw a whole week of rain in the forecast but I realized if I look for the positive then my family will too and the trip will be more fun. This is your vacation. Don’t spend it angry and picky about stuff.

9. All the universal staff were very kind and friendly. I was very impressed. People talk about the Disney quality for their staff but universal is just as good from what I saw.

10. Get there early - this was the key to everything. Security was a breeze, we were able to chill more. We rode a ton early then relaxed during the heat mid day and rode more in the evening or used the rain to our advantage.

Thanks for the info we leave Monday. Where did you see you can early admission IOA with premier only? I don’t think that’s true.

It is correct. On the Universal site preferred pass holders got early entry to both parks 7/1-7/5, premier is all month both parks. Resort guests are also all month both parks. (July)

How were the lines for the freestyle cups in the parks and was there ice? How about the lines for Icees? I’m trying to decide whether or not to pack our cups.

On the sign in both parks when you walk up to get into the roped off areas. Islands was only premier level - no preferred or lower.

Mixed. Ice we usually found at least one machine in the “bank” of machines that still had ice and most of the other people waiting were ok with me stealing some if I got in the no ice line. Literally half or more of people in lines were just getting ice and water and didn’t purchase the refills. There was a few times some person filled up like 7 cups with ice and got some dirty looks. Ice started running out more later in the day after 6pm or so. Some of the best spots were in richter burger (sneak in the back doors), there’s a partially hidden refill across from kings cross and the smaller kiosks across from like Jurassic river adventure. Still very much worth the very expensive prices if you want soda.

Do the Coke freestyle cups have handles? We have 2 at home that have handles but I really want some without. We have a velco stroller handle bag that could easily hold 4 cups without handles but it would be a tight fit for 3 with handles.

There’s a couple different styles I think. The old style cups have handles. The tumbler style cups with the velocicoaster logo didn’t have handles. It was like a plastic Yeti insulated thingy.

I was under the impression that the water wasn’t free… that only an activated refillable mug could be used to get water??

Also, the refillable mugs from the hotel can’t be used in the parks right? I’m thinking they have to be bought separately.

The hotel refillable mugs do not work in the parks. We have the ones for the park, but are considering buying the hotel ones too. I wonder how many people do that? I am also curious about the water for not activated cups.

Ok thanks! Yes I’m curious too. I was planning on buying the refillable mugs for the family but I’m a huge water drinker and didn’t know if I could just refill my own bottle/refillable cup or if I can get free water at the quick service places. I’m so used to Disney where they have trays of cups of water at all the QS places which is so convenient. Never been to Universal yet so I’m a bit clueless.

I saw quite a few people get ice then put their cups down and it said you have no refills left and they hit water and get water. Am 100% sure I saw it at the refill station in city walk. Also maybe it’s common knowledge but I thought I saw someone say they wish they had freestyle machines at the resorts. They have one in the Hard Rock Hotel in the coffee/icecream shop on the lowest level by the elevators that worked with the park cups. It didn’t have much by the end of the day tho.

Thanks so much! We’re staying at Dockside and Portofino so hopefully they’ll have one like HRH that is compatible. I’d hate to buy everyone park cups AND hotel cups.

Of course water is so much better for you! So glad I (mostly) gave up soda! But curious... can you get water from the freestyle kiosks without a cup?

Thanks for clarifying. We are staying on property so we are good. Though I don’t think it’s worth it to do EA given the new virtual queue system for Hagrids.

Wait - is there no more early standby at all for Hagrid's (meaning rope drop)? Are you now required to use VQ at all times?
