I love our new dog. I didn't want him, but he's great. Had a huge one we had to put down two years ago. DW convinced me to get a little dog. Chihuahua. Cooper, like mini cooper.

we have a chihuahua now also. A girl that hubby works with rescued her and we took her home to fatten her up a bit, housetrain her and try and find her a "forever" home. I guess she found her "forever" home, it seems to be here.

They are a bundle of joy, energetic and want nothing more than to love you it seems. Ours is like that at least.

Enjoy the little one, they really are sweet.


As for pics. Take a pic and upload to an image hosting site (I like imageshack.us). Take the link from it and post [ img ] insert URL here [ / img ] . Take the spaces out though.

What I do is save the picture on your computer. Go to the "Photos" tab above on this page. There's a tab to log in and then a tab that says Upload pictures. Follow the instructions to upload your pic (you may have to resize the photo if it's huge which is easy to do either with your computer [you can usually find out what you can do with your current system if you right click on the picture] or you can use a free photo editing software to resize [I use Irfanview]). Once uploaded, right click on the picture. Highlight and copy all of the information found in "Properties". Post a reply to this thread and "paste" what you copied into the reply with

right after. For example:

Then just "Submit reply" and your done. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is I promise. You can also get the photo's off of websites such as flickr and photobucket.

Hope we get to see a pic!! I just love little doggies! All dogs find a way to wiggle, lick, and cuddle their way into our hearts.

O.K., I'll admit dogs look cute, but they're such a pain to own.

They're just too much vacumming, walking, crotch sniffing, licking, jumping on your bed, stinkiness, feeding them, vacuuming, chewing up your stuff, etc. Oh and did I mention they cause too much vacuuming?

Really, who needs a dog?

I do!!

I've had dogs around me ever since I was born. I couldn't imagine never having one. They bring such joy into my life. My neighbors would probably agree with you. The dog just lays around their living room and no one ever plays with him or takes him for walks. They leave him outside for hours and hours and he just lays around the backyard.

If you're dog is properly trained (and if you're consistent with them) they won't sniff your crotch or jump on your bed or chew your stuff.

As for the other stuff, it gives me great pleasure feeding, cleaning, and loving my dog (I don't vacuum any extra than I already do as she has such short hairs and doesn't shed much). Little dogs are A LOT easier to care for than the larger dogs I've had in the past. I would take the years of enjoyable life my dogs have given me over an immaculately clean house any day.

To each their own, dog (or really any pet) ownership isn't for everyone.

I was mostly joking.

Part of the Max problem is that I was such an amateur when we got him. He's the only dog I've ever owned, and I didn't realize when we got him as a puppy that he should never be allowed on any of our furniture.

However, you are the first person who's told me that you can actually train a dog not to crotch sniff. I've been under the impression that it's an instinctive thing that dogs do to identify people.

Well, I guess it depends on if the dog can even reach your crotch .

Now that I think about it I've only seen it done on "It's Me or the Dog" on Animal Planet and I can't for the life of me remember what she did to get the dog to stop. It was a very dominant male German Shepard. If you go to the It's Me or the Dog website:

there's a lot of her tips on there (and full episodes if you go to the "TV Shows" tab). I have caught maybe 3 episodes where she trained a dog to stop going for the crotch. She's AMAZING at training dogs to do just about everything.

I've only every had female dogs and none of them have done it. Good luck getting him to stop!

When our Siberian Husky, Quincy died, we swore up and down that we would never get another dog. Too much heartache.

Then, a couple of years ago, my sister started begging to get another dog. For a while, my mom and I stood strong against it. Then, my sister started wearing my mom down, showing her websites and pictures. I still said, "No, it's just too hard when they go."

So, mom and sis decided to go to look at some pups, "just to look, Not going to get any." I am sure you are all familiar with those famous last words. I looked in the trunk, and there were towels and a leash. Just to go look.....

So, here we are, two years later. We have Luke, a big ol fluffy labradoodle. He snuggles with me, and plays around. He is my absolute best friend.

That whole swearing we'd never get another dog. We've been there. IN 1997 we bought our house and 2 months later got a St. Bernard puppy. (we had planned on a mixed breed one year old female no more than 80lbs from the pound, see how that worked out). In 1998 I was on a walk near my work and wandered into the city pound. One week later an 11 yo golden mix joined our family. (we already had a cat from 1996 that was abandoned). In 2002 the golden mix died. In 2005 the Saint died and in 2007 the cat died. We had no animals and we were not going to get any more (except "maybe" a cat). In 2008 our friend J died. We inherited her 2 senior dogs. Brittany was 17 at the time and Tuesday was 13. Brittany died about 2 months ago. About 1 month ago "the cat" arrived on our door step and it was getting cold outside. Then we got a call from a lady who raised Saints and knew of a 7Yo that needed a home. Rufous joined the family this past Friday.

So yeah, after these 2, no more dogs....

Well, this thread is timely for me because I'm trying to make the decision right now whether or not to adopt a dog. I could barely sleep last night thinking about this. I have all the paperwork ready to send to the rescue group but I can’t seem to pull the trigger. I just don’t know what to do. My DH and I love animals and have three cats, but the cats are so much easier than dogs. I just have this fear that we’ll never be able to travel again if we get a dog! I know we CAN travel, and we can take the dog to my step-daughter’s house or, worst case, to a kennel, but I’m afraid I’ll feel too guilty to leave a dog. I’m such a sucker that way! DH would rather have a big dog, but I think a small to medium dog is about the biggest commitment I’m ready to make. Sheesh, it’s like having a child – sometimes it never feels like the perfect time to have one, but you just do it and it usually turns out fine.

After we lost our beloved bulldog, Winnie, DH was ready before I was and I agreed to send in the adoption app. It did turn out perfectly because we got our wonderful little boy, Hooch, who was MEANT to be ours, for sure. Good luck to you!

I know what you mean!! I went back and forth with that too. Especially since I was getting a breed (Miniature Pinscher) that is known for having separation anxiety issues. Luckily my brother's been able to watch her anytime I go somewhere but I'm dreading the next WDW trip (2011) as my brother and his gf and my parents all want to go so I'll HAVE to put her in kennel. I'm thinking I may have to build up to those 9-10 days with a few short little weekend trips. Or else I may be taking my parents motorhome to WDW! I definitely feel a major guilt trip anytime I have to leave her for an extended period of time as she doesn't just love anybody (she puts up with people) and hates loud noises (why I'm most nervous putting her in a kennel with dogs that bark all night). This was so much easier with the yellow lab I had before her who loved EVERYONE! Good luck with whatever you decide! Even with the guilt, it is worth it (to me anyways) and not all dogs give you the big sad eyes before you leave . I've always said I wasn't going to get another dog after one dies but now I know I'll always have one. The death is extremely hard (I watched my yellow lab die in front of me) but I just remember all of the good times I had with them.
