Our cruise is over sad to say because the last day was the best. But here we go with a trip report.
We flew into LGA and were met by the DCL rep to get our transfer to the port. We were put into a van with only 2 working seat belts, smelled of cigarette smoke, and was not as clean as I prefer. We put the kids in the belts and hoped for the best. The driver scared us to death! I can't count how many close calls we had. I would have thought this was normal except we had an outstanding driver from the port to the airport on the way home. (We used a private car company since we had an earlier than recommended flight home)
It was incredible to sail past NY, loved every minute of it. We had late seating for dinner so headed back to the cabin to unpack and shower. Once the ship hit open water the rocking motion was horrible and we were on deck 2! DH, DS (16), and DD (11) went to dinner, but I couldn't make it. DH said our tablemates had to leave dinner early due to feeling ill. The next day was a sea day. I felt better but not great. The kids were fine and enjoyed activities in their clubs. DH and I played trivia and won!! I didn't eat much during the day and saw a ton of people (more than usual) with the patch behind their ear. We saw Twice Charmed and enjoy it. We did all make it to dinner. So pleased we had the nicest tablemates! Our service team was the pits though. They were very nice but just not good at their jobs. The first night DS never got the appetizer he ordered. Tonight I didn't get my drink (a regular coke) even though I asked for it 3 times.
Halifax day-a rainy day but we walked into town anyway. We went to the Freak Lunchbox candy store on a recommendation. They did have some neat candy but not worth the walk in the rain, but I would go back on a nice day
We took the Titanic and Peggy's Cove tour in the afternoon. It was very interesting. The guide was nice but kept saying "I forgot what I was going to say." It got annoying after awhile. The sun did come out when we were at Peggy's Cove, wish we'd had longer there as it was so beautiful. At dinner my medium well steak was rare...so gross. I would have loved to have it fixed but never saw the servers until they collected the plates and passed out the dessert menu.
St. John-We stayed on the ship in the morning to sleep in. There was some awful banging noises last night that happened every 30-45 minutes waking us up, finally stopped about 4:30am. Guest services didn't have a clue as to what it was so it continued all night. We took the Maple Sugar tour, totally not worth it! We learned the history of maple sugar making and saw old equipment. Even though sap is collected in the spring, I assumed they continued the production of syrup all summer-wrong. We looked at their equipment. Then we were given 2 pancakes, a sausage and syrup to taste. The person before me spilled syrup in a chair, and I didn't see it before I sat in it!! It was a sticky mess. The kicker was-the syrup was not even good!!
At dinner the server told us that we would be getting comment cards and be sure to rate his service excellent. I though for sure I had heard him wrong. But he continued to tell us that Disney will only know he gave us excellent service if we mark the card. I was stunned! We almost missed the pirate party because the service was so incredibly slow. It was almost 45 minutes from the time we got our appetizers until he finally brought dinner. They did the little pirate show in the dining room. We were the last ones to leave the dining room after wolfing down dessert. There was something wrong every night or a part of the meal missing for 1 or more people at our table. We never got refills on our water or drinks unless we asked. Only 1 night did we only have to ask once, usually it was 2-3 times. The server was not personable. It was pirate night, and our server seemed to be the only one not joking around having fun with their tables. It somewhat brought the mood down, but we still enjoyed the party afterward. Glad our assistant server got the younger kids at our table involved, they loved it
Sea day-A really fun day. The kids were with their friends so DH and I spent the day together. I finally felt better, like myself so really enjoyed the day. Dinner was the same-I got a diet coke, wrong, I drink regular and have every single night of the cruise. I know the servers work hard but we've been on cruises before, and this was far and away the worst service ever. I would never reduce a server's tip because I know they depend on that money, but this was the first time we did not tip extra.
Our stateroom hostess on the other hand was so exceptional! Our room was so clean, and she was so nice. She knew I was ill the first night and made a point to ask how I was feeling. There were a lot of little touches she did to make our stay magical.
Overall I am glad we did this itinerary since it is so different from the Caribbean and Bahamas. We did Alaska on the Wonder last year and had the vacation of a lifetime, absolutely amazing. Possibly my expectations were a bit high thus some disappointment. However, it didn't stop us from booking our next Disney cruise!
