I just thought i'd post about our recent experiences with buying and using American sims for our iPhones and my iPad for our trip.

For this trip we were travelling with 2 iPhones ( mine and DH's) and an iPad. On previous holidays we have just used global roaming for phone calls and have not used data at all on our phones. However, this time I knew I'd want to be able to use my iPad and phone for Maps, Facebook, apps etc while we were on the road and I didn't want to be hit with big bills on our return. Getting the phones up and running with American sims was a bit of an effort but it was Definitely worth the effort.

I used 200Mb of data on my iPhone on our trip - at Telstra's data roaming rates that would have cost me over $3,000. !! :scared1:

I used 3.5Gb of data on my iPad. At Telstra INternational data roaming ratesthat would have cost me over $8000 !!!! :scared1::scared1:

We were planning to travel in some pretty remote areas so I decided that we'd have one phone with T-Mobile and one with AT&T to , hopefully, improve our chances of having a signal as much as possible.

We chose plans that would give us plenty of credit for calls to American phones, texts to American & Australian phones and data.

The plans we chose did not include cheap calls to Australian phones. We only rang home to Australia using Skype when we had access to WiFi.

My DH also took an old phone with him and put his Aussie sim in that as a backup. He left it off most of the time and just turned it on occasionally to see if there were any messages etc.

FOR THE PHONES

T-Mobile

From travelgear.com.au I bought a T-Mobile sim. Travel gear will activate the sim for you and add as much credit as you want.

For DH I asked them to activate the "Pay by the Day" $2 per day plan. With this plan you pay $2 for any day that you "use" the phone. It includes unlimited calls and texts to American phone numbers as well as unlimited Edge/2G data. (Australian phones don't use the right frequency to use the T-Mobile 3G system so with T-Mobile you will only get 2G data speeds)

The sims arrived promptly and there was no setup required, they are already activated for you. They sent some instructions about the plans and about adding credit and once we were in the USA, we popped the sims into the phones and everything just worked.

When I purchased the Sim I asked them to add $10 of credit to DH's phone because I didn't think he'd use it very often. However , some of DH's apps on his iPhone were set to receive notifications, this meant that although he didn't make or receive calls/txts every day, he WAS "using" his phone every day as his apps were accessing the data every day. So we ended up having to add extra credit to his phone. That was easy to do through the ezetop.com website.

The T Mobile coverage seemed to be pretty good, he only lost signal in some of the remoter areas that we covered on our trip.

However, the 2G/Edge data speed is really slow when you are used to Telstra 3G data speeds. It was able to access emails and use the maps etc but it was pretty slow to load. Personally, I'm glad that we also had AT&T 3G speeds for my iPad and my iPhone as 3 weeks of 2G speeds would have driven me nuts!

AT&T

For my iPhone I bought an AT&T sim from mobipassport.com

The sim arrived promptly in a little wallet with some basic instructions, for the detailed information you need to go to the Mobipassport website to get step by step instructions.

The AT&T sims come unactivated and with no credit so you have to go through the process of activating them and adding credit and data yourself.

Activating and choosing a plan

I followed the instructions on their website to activate my sim a few days before we left. That was easy. They have very detailed insructions on their website.

I chose the $25 monthly plan. You MUST choose a monthly plan if you want to add a data pack to your smartphone. If you don't need to use data you can use one of the $2 per day plans instead.

ONce you activate your sim you are supposed to be able log in to the AT&T website (https://www.myprepaidrefill.com/MobilityUSWeb/login.do ) to look at your account, add credit and add data. However, when you activate the sim they send a text with your new website pin to your AT&T phone number. So you can't get your pin until you get to the USA and put the sim in your phone. Once in the USA you can go to the website and use the "Forgot my Pin" link and they will resend your pin to your phone.

When we arrived in the USA i had to put the sim in the iPhone. This was a bit tricky as the AT&T sims seem to be fractionally larger than our Australian sims. I was able to get it in OK but it involved a little effort.

Adding credit and Data

I then needed to use the hotel's free WiFi to go to the AT&T website so that I could add some credit to my phone and to purchase a data pack. I added $25 of credit to cover the payment for the first ( and only) month, then I bought a $15 data plan ( this gave me 200Mb of data for the phone)

There is an option to add 1Gb of data but I thought I'd mainly be using my iPad for data and so 200Mb on my phone should be enough. However, I did use my phone a bit for the Disney Apps and also I used it to upload photos to facebook when I didnt have WiFi access and so my data did run out in about 2 1/2 weeks.

I was able to pay using our Australian ANZ Visa card to pay for the credit etc without any problems.

AT&T send a confirmation email and after that my iPhone was functioning just fine as a phone.

However to get the data working on the iPhone requires one more step. ( all the details our outlined clearly on the Mobipassport website) Using the hotels free wifi I had to use my phone browser to go to unlockit.co.nz In this site you need to choose the option to "Download APN" ( to copy the correct data settings to your phone) , then choose AT&T from the list and the correct settings are downloaded to your phone. After that the data was up and running on my iPhone. The coverage was pretty much the same as my DH's T-Mobile. IN built up areas I had excellent coverage, I found the AT&T 3G data to be pretty fast. In more remote areas my 3G data dropped to 2g/Edge speeds.

FOR THE IPAD

I purchased an iPad data sim from travelgear.com.au. This comes to you with a set of instructions for setting up the iPad once you get to the USA and put the sim in your iPad.

The setup process is all done from the iPad itself so you need to have access to a WiFi hotspot to do it. I used my Hotel WiFi. Setup includes choosing a data amount and entering a USA address ( I just used the hotel address). Travel gear say that AT&T won't accept all Australian credit cards. I was able to pay using my ANZ Visa credit card. Others have been able to pay using a Travelex Visa from Australia Post or by purchasing Visa Gift cards in the USA.

I chose the 3Gb data package that cost $30. I used my iPad every day of our trip for Google maps ( we were on a road trip) I also used it to access Facebook and Disboards and to upload photos etc. I tried to use the Hotel Wifi as much as possible but I did use it alot on the road so My data ran out about 2 1/2 weeks into the trip so I had to purchase an additional 3gB.

Absolutely awesome information here Andona. I was dying to ask you about this but wanted to give you time to get back into life after your trip before annoying you :rotfl2:.

The detail you have included is wonderful. I'm more the "creative" type than the "techie" type. My DH says I'm like a 70 year old man who is afraid of technology :lmao:.

I have a question that relates to my own personal situation for our trip.

My DH and I would like to take our iphones. I'm not fussed either way but he thinks the maps would be handy. We would not be using them for Disney apps (I don't think :)) and we aren't going to remote areas or roadtripping. We will be in major cities for the whole time of our trip (save the Canada leg but I'm not sure what to do about that yet).

We had also planned on buying this wireless dongle that can run up to 5 devices:- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/T-Mobile+-+4G+Mobile+Hotspot/2380066.p?id=1218323855534&skuId=2380066 which we would use to run the laptop, ipad and DD's phone for Facebook connection when in our hotel room. That's for when there isn't free wifi at the hotel.

So I guess my question is, do you think the T mobile sim option with the $2 per day would be a good one for us for our phones? The main thing we want the phones for is so we can text or call each other if we are separated and need to meet up. Any other internet benefits are secondary. We don't want to buy a monthly plan as we are away for 5 weeks so I thought the $2 a day would be good, especially when we are in Canada for 7 days in the middle of the trip.

And since you are so super techie smart, could you take a look at the dongle we are looking at and tell me your thoughts on whether this would be the way to go?

Thanks for any info and thoughts you can give me on this. :)

Fantastic, thanks so much Andona, this is really really useful. I will get DH to read in detail, as it is all a bit beyond me ( I don't even own a smartphone or know how to text!)

Andona this is wonderful :)

We were planning on taking our smartphones with our aussoe sims and just only using us local wifi rather than the phone's data.. We were also thinking we would just use global roaming for calls and just skype for calls but your way makes a lot more sense.

Just a word of warming on T-mobile sims - I used this option in July, and although the phone worked ok for calls and data, SMS didn't work.

I used a Tmobile sim as well while away. It was great for calls to USA numbers and internet although when I tried to make calls to Australia I couldn't connect and 'apparently' when DD's father tried to ring us he couldn't get through (although I believe this was just his incompetence) :confused3

when we went last Nov AT&T sims would not give you Data Pack in an iPhone for prepaid, this is great news. Did you have to unlock the iphone before you left?

Ummm ... may I check something with you? whom were you trying to SMS? If using numbers already in your phone memory, SMS did you change the phone number to dial international?

Wow, excellent info. We have Samsung smart phones, but we only use them as phones, so we won't be taking them with us next year. We will be taking my iPad though, I doubt I could live without it these days!

I would strongly recommend not using global roaming at all. Unless you only make one or two calls. Just two calls can cost you more than the price of a sim card and plan for a month.

Wow, that's really great and handy info! Thanks for typing it all out.

If there was a mod here I'd suggest a sticky! :lmao:

Thanks for the kind words guys! I spent ages researching this before we went and I thought it was helpful for people to know how it worked out for us.

Shuttergirl, I'm not really super-techie smart! Just a geek who likes to research these things and can't bear to be seperated from her gadgets! :rotfl:

if you mainly want the phones to talk to each other ( on your US numbers) and maybe to call other US numbers like restaurants etc then I think the T Mobile $2 per day plan would be a good option. The only thing is that if you don't want to use apps etc on your iPhone you should turn off the Cellular Data on your iPhone so that you weren't inadvertently using up your daily credit by your apps accessing the internet for notifications etc.

If your DH wants to access the maps on his iPhone he'd have unlimited 2G data to do that. The maps will load but they'll be slower than he is used to.

As for that MiFi dongle, it seems to get fairly good reviews. eg here http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2384639,00.asp The only thing I wondered was that Bestbuy website doesn't indicate what data plan you get when you buy from them? Do you know if you'll have to add a data package? If all of you are using it you'll want a fairly hefty data allowance, particularly if you are uploading photos to Facebook etc.

My husband was able to send texts to our (American) numbers using his T-Mobile sim without any problems. He also received a text from our daughter in Australia so that was fine. He didn't send any texts to Australian numbers though, so I can't comment on that.

We only used Skype to make international calls. But if you want to be able to use your T-Mobile sim to call home to Australia then you would need to have one of the pre-paid monthly plans on your phone instead of a Pay-by-theday plan. Then you can add a $10 unlimited international talk/text package to your T-Mobile plan. ( Note: You cannot add the unlimited International talk/text package to a pay-by-the-day plan)

On the Travelgear site they have all the information about the Monthly T-mobile plans as well as the Pay-by-the-day plans. ( By the way, I have no affiliation with either Travelgear or Mobipassport, just a satisfied customer)

Here's the page on the T-Mobile site that tells about the Pay by the Day plans: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/pay-by-the-day-cell-phone-plans

when we went last Nov AT&T sims would not give you Data Pack in an iPhone for prepaid, this is great news. Did you have to unlock the iphone before you left?

Tara, I'm sorry you were given the run-around by AT&T. :sad1: Firstly, if you go into an AT&T store now they will STILL tell you that you can't have data on your iPhone with one of their pre-paid plans. However, that isn't true - ( it's a policy thing on their part to try to get people to buy post-paid!) . You can get data on your pre-paid plan but you have to go through the steps of downloading the correct APN settings for AT&T from the unlockit.co.nz site. AT&T don't make it easy for us travellers! :crazy2:

Also, yes I did have to get our iPhones unlocked before we went. I did NOT have to get my sons smartphone unlocked. Telstra said all non-iPhones on post-paid plans are already unlocked. Only the iPhones are locked.

If you have an iPhone you need to contact your telco ( Telstra for us) and give them your iPhone's IMEI number and ask them to arrange to unlock the phone. That can take a couple of days. Then you need to Sync your iPhone with iTunes and do a backup/restore for the unlock process to complete. When it's done correctly you will see a pop-up message in iTunes telling you "Congratulations Your Phone is unlocked" There's info on the Travelgear site about that here http://help.travelgear.com.au/entries/20433152-how-do-i-unlock-my-apple-iphone

Note that just Syncing the phone with iTunes isn't enough. I had to do a backup/restore of my iPhone before I got the "congratulations" message.

You can check that your phone is unlocked by putting a sim in from another Telco to see if you get connected to a service. You can borrow one from a friend that uses a different telco or you can buy one of those cheap $2 sims fom the supermarket to check it.

5ofUs - I was the same! I am so addicted to my iPad that I just couldn't bear to be unable to use it for maps and browsing etc as needed while we were on the road, it was SO useful. I booked a couple of hotels with it while we were driving along, 3 minutes before we showed up at their door :lmao: The AT&T sim from Travelgear worked really well.

It's really bad actually. I went to Melbourne for a couple of days without it for the footy GF and felt so totally lost. I'm so use to having everything at my fingertips. The world is a different place than it was ten years ago!

Good info. I am looking at the personal MIFI hotspot as well. Some of the hotels on our trip charge for internet at over $10 per day, in particular the Hyatt in Anaheim, for our 12 days that would be well over the $130 it costs for the wifi hotspot and then some.

Adding a montly data allowance for mean that we would have portable 4 g access for a entire month. seems worth it.

we definetly need a sticky, the sticky on the other page is pretty old and doesnt include this kind of info, nor updated info on car hire.

Andona, this really is a wonderful resource. Great information in so much detail. Thank you for taking the time to type it up and posting it to help us other fellow travellers!

There actually have been a few threads that I would liked to see as a "sticky" as there are some common questions that come up time and time again. Wonder if we'll ever get a moderator?

Would definitely agree with Marvel that you should never use global roaming EVER other than in cases of emergency.

I just have a quick question Andona, I have just been playing with my old iphone4 and thought I would visit unzipit now and see if I could change it with wifi here at home so this step would be done when arriving in the US. It seems that I can :cool1: But when it says to choose the carrier, there is AT&T, AT&T (blackberry) (clearly not that for iphone), AT&T (Blue), AT&T (broadband), AT&T (hspa+), AT&T (isp.cingular), AT&T (LTE), AT&T (PAYG), AT&T (wap.cingular), AT&T MNVO (with proxy) and AT&T MVNO to choose from.

Did you have all of those options and just chose plain AT&T?

PS, that is the most marvelous post of information that you have given here. Thank you so much for taking the time to share all that. Wish we could add stickys to the top of our board! We need this info at the top for everyone to easily access :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! The thought of setting up data for the US seemed so overwhelming, but it seems like it's not that hard after all :thumbsup2
