Virgin Airlines isn't new at all... it's just new to the US market within the past year or 2.
Yes, of course I know that Virgin as an entity isn't new (how could I know the name of the founder of Virgin, along with his reputation, WITHOUT knowing that, one wonders???). However, the airline operating in the US is new. And the various airlines branded with the Virgin name have different names...Virgin Atlantic (obvious where they fly), now Virgin Blue for Australia...
the one operating in the States is NEW. And they could have made the choice to behave like the other cool airlines that inspire loyalty in fun ways. I mean, I chose to not book VA both ways on one Disneyland trip simply because we had vouchers for Alaska from a price drop...so Alaska got our business for that flight instead of VA (VA got our business on the way down as it was lower than Alaska AND they have great flight times to get to LAX in the morning, while Alaska has the good flight times *home*)
The OP might have just one change fee, or she could have several, depending on how it's booked. If it's just the ONE change fee, she should go for it if she'd save $65. But if it's booked in such a way that ti's going to cause several change fees, that's not helpful.
