...... I'm not usually a very good customer as far as Barclaycard are concerned. I pay up on time and so they rarely earn anything on interest ......... however, I put my November statement away and forgot about it until today.

I called the bank and paid in full straightaway so was 6 days late. I checked with Barclaycard and they have already charged me interest........ fair enough...... but have also charged £20 late payment fee ...... ouch!

I too have found myself in a similar position with my Access card.

When it happens, I get straight on the phone and after the usual giving your account number and security checks they'll say what can I do to help you.

I then say something like this "You have charged me £18 for late payment, this was an oversight on my part, it won't happen, please could you remove this charge and credit me back ? "

They have never refused... Try it, you have nothing to lose, only to gain...

I would call and ask them to remove the late charge, I imagine they will do that.

That's a really large late fee.

... Terry and Kath - I took your advice and called! As a "one-off good will gesture" they are refunding that charge!! I would not have called back if it wasn't for your posts and advice from Janice too :) so thank you!

I was told that they would not waive the charge again and that it is a flat rate for all late payments whether the balance is £10,000 or £10.

If you always pay off the entire amount as I do set up a standing order - that way it gets paid automatically on time and no penalty or interest charges are ever paid. I don't know if the banks actually like you doing this or not but I've always done it even if it hurts sometimes!

Actually Ive just had another thought - have you thought about looking at a differenct Card that doesnt charge this?

I suppose it might be worth looking into - I have MBNA and also RBS Advanta - I dont recall any late charges on either of them, and I am sure I've been late paying at least once!!!!!

I can give you numbers if you want to enquire.

:D
