My wife and I will be going on the 09/05/05 Western Cruise for the first time. I have been searching the threads and I haven't seen any that answer some questions that I have regarding or first Disney cruise.

#1 - What are the "extras" that need to be paid for while on the ship?

#2 - What excursions are worth the money?

#3 - Can a couple that is cruising without their kids REALLY find a moment of peace and quiet and where?

:cool1: Congratulations! You are signed up for a cruise of a lifetime!

We took our first cruise last november on the Wonder and had the best time of our lives. We took our kids with us but since they thought the kids clubs were better than being with us, it was like we cruised alone! :cheer2:

There is so much to do and YES...there are many places that are adult only. Palos restaurant, Vista Spa, the adult pool and hot tubs, the cove coffee bar and of course the beat street at night. There are also many other nooks and crannies all over the ship that are not inundated with kids. I have heard that late seating also tends to have fewer kids that early seating times.

You need to budget $$ for spa treatments, Palos, drinks, and souveniers. We personally spent about $500 for a four day cruise last year on these things.

Good luck!

On the Western, I highly recommend

1)Coz- taking taxi to Chankanaab National Park....really nice....excellent snorkeling.....do this excursion on your own vs DCL's

2) Key West - Conch train....

3) Grand Cayman - Captain Marvin's Stingray City (non-DCL excursion)...This is a board favorite

There are areas of the ship and Castaway Cay designated as adult only that are serene and quiet....the rules are strictly enforced....Please note that the ship is huge and very well designed....Contrary to what you may be visualizing, you won't be dodging little ones with every step......

Just got back yesterday from the Western.

Key West- what can you say? We rented bikes just so we could go to the Southernmost Point. What a let-down. We liked the bikes. There was a beach right along the bike trail. I guess if you want to swim - go there. We'll probably stay on the ship the next time.

Grand Cayman - Stingray City with Captain Marvins. This was our 2nd time so we received the 10% off. It was $35.00 pp and we did the 1/2 day snorkel trip. We snorkeled in about 8-10 ft of water, away from Stingray and then out at the barrier reef. Awesome fish. Lots of colors! Also stayed around 20 minutes-30 minutes at Stingray City. Very Cool!

Cozumel - Cozumel Mini-Golfito is still there. Still fun! They only take cash though. Took a taxi for 3 to Playa del Corona. Free entrance. If you order something from their bar or menu you can use the table, shower and bano. If you don't - pull up a rock. We snorkeled for $12.00 pp and were able to keep the snorkel tube! Good fish - if you're a good swimmer you could snorkel next door to Chakanaab. We opted for the free entrance to the beach rather than the $12.00 pp to get into Chakanaab.

We met a couple (Ruth & Russ) on our first night, they were grandparents who were seated at our table. They were alone - their second trip on DCL by themselves. They're booking again. They prefer DCL b/c other ships have 'old people'. They were 60/70 something and were very young-hearted. This ship is Magical if you let it be!

Extras - tips (plan for $250.00)
cab fares
beach costs
snorkeling
room service tips
Cozumel bartering with street vendors

+order room service night before (pb&j, chips and cookies) and pack it in a soft-side cooler. Tip room service $1.00 pp and you can bring them off.
+put on sunscreen before you leave - plenty on your back if you plan on snorkeling.
+bring cash to Cozumel - no one besides the store owners accept credit.

If you have questions - just ask. Great trip! Need another kid?

TIPS! And if you are planning on the Palo, tips for your Palo server as well (you won't get a receipt to tip them with at the end of the cruise but they will have you sign a slip while dining for the $10 pp fee (we just put our tip on that recept).

Kim makes a point about cash in Cozumel -- good idea! But if you do decide to use a credit card at any of the stores, hold on to your receipt and check it against your credit card statement. Of the 3 shops we used our credit card in when we were in Cozumel, the conversion rate to the US dollar went up and our credit card was charged the difference. If you are buying jewelry, that can make a big difference! Just dispute the charge with your credit card company when you get home if there is a difference - they will need a copy of your original receipt with the US conversion and the "agreed to" price.

Have a super time!
Stacy

Congratulations! You will love it. How old are your kids and what are your ports of call?
My kids never wanted to be with us on the ship. They loved the kids club. If this is the case with you also, you will be fighting to spend time with them, not the other way around.
For extras.....TIPS. That one surprised me the first time and it is a big surprise. I think $320.00 for four is in the ballpark ($11.00 per person per day). Other than that, it is basically anything except food and basic drinks (sometimes pop, sometimes not but you can bring it onboard, also). So if you drink budget for how much (about the same prices as stateside Chilis). If you want to buy stuff to take how, how much (it is expensive), if you want a massage....etc. Does this make sense? I would recommend paying to have the dinner at Palos. It took us 4 cruises to decide to splurge (okay not that much of a splurge :teeth: ) and MAN was it worth it. Excursions are another big one. Check out www.cruisecritic.com under boards and ports of call. You can read a lot about the different ports of call and fun things to do or not to do there. Very informative. My experience is someplaces you don't need to have and excursion and some you definately do. I agree with the above posters....Chankanaub was great ($10 cab each way from closest dock and $10 pp to get in), Stingray city is a must and definately book through someone outside the cruiseline (cheaper and a lot less crowded). Capt Marvin is good and there are other reputable ones out there. About $35 or $40 and worth every penny. We usually spend (for two of us) about $500.00 for a seven day (w/out excursions, which we book on our own). We don't buy hardly anything and drink when we want it. Somewhere between excessive and not at all  . Also, head over to cruise meets and chat with those you are going to be on the ship with. It makes it that much more fun. Sorry so long, I have a big mouth! :cool1:

I see that you have gotten plenty of answers on the first 2 questions so here's the answer to #3. Yes a couple can have peace and quiet on the cruise without children. Dh and I took our honeymoon on the ship in Sept of last year and it was wonderful. The adult pool is really nice and only occationally will a child wander through. But over all it was great! We always enjoy ourselves because the ship caters to big kids as well! Hope this answers your question.

I've been to Xcaret, one of the excursions in Cozumel, It was a lots of fun. theres a man-made cavern that you can swim/snorkle through that was a blast. According to the Passporter, this excursion is a bit pricey though. ~$100 pp.

#1 - What are the "extras" that need to be paid for while on the ship?
What can you spend money on onboard?

Family of 4 on a seven night cruise will generate a "standard" gratuity of about $305. If the family of 4 goes on a 4 night cruise the gratuity would be about $175. Some people don't tip (don't go there :) ). Some just the standard, some a little more and some tip a LOT more (::yes:: yes the service is THAT good).

If you go to Palo there is a service charge of $10 per person. You should tip above this service charge for "using the room";) Some people kick in an extra $10 per person, others have said that they've tipped $100 -- Wow!!

Room service is free for most items on the menu (sodas and some items you have to pay for). Be sure to tip your "server" or is it runner in this case. DCL has reciently made it possible to tip your server on your KTTW card.

Room service There are items on the menu that Do carry a charge -soda and the other chargable beverages along with several food items.

Baskets and Cruise Gifts I don't know if you can order these once you are on board but you can most definately order them before your cruise. DCL includes a brochure with your cruise documents.

Depending upon the ages of your children (or if your DW is gosh darn beautiful :sunny: ) Shutters may be a big ticket item. The 6x8 (small) photos are around $10 each. I don't remember how much the formal (large) photos are (maybe $20 each).

If you stick to the drink of the day, they will run you $3.50 each (which isn't too bad). Otherwise the prices go up from there (but still are not outrageous!!) Speciality Drinks - like coffees, smoothies etc carry a charge. Smoothies run about $5.00 each with manditory tip.

If you buy the wine package for dinner the cost is $185 to $250 depending upon the package purchased. If you buy wine by the bottle I believe you can count on $50 per bottle (but if you each only drink 1 glass each, it will last for two nights and your waiters will take care of it for you!)

There is also a "water package" that you can purchase for dinners. Why  , I don't know, the water that the ship "makes" is wonderful.

Shore excursions really add up. Even if you do a "cheep" $45 excursion that's $180 for the family.

If you do the wine tasting class onboard there's a cost and I really don't know how much it is because I don't like wine that much.

Spa treatments run from $83 to well over $200 per person per treatment (count on at least $100 :earseek: ).

Arcade cards for the kids. Denominations start at $10 and go up from there.

Now for the souvineers: you can get some small plastic figurine for $5. If you want a tee shirt, think at least $35, polo shirts are well over $50. A DCL frame for one of your 6x8 pictures will run you $18 to $20. Lots of fun stuff to buy for the whole family at Mickey's Mates. Then across the hall is the Treasure Ketch and that stuff is generally way more expensive!!

Then there's the "store" that's between Rock'n Bar D and Diversions on the Magic (its in the same location on the Wonder-just different Club Names) that sells tobaco and alcohol products. I believe that any alcohol you purchase CAN NOT be consumed onboard. They will deliver it to you close to disembarkation time.

Some people have a Bingo habit that costs them a ton of $$$$. I believe that it's $35 for 5 or 6 games. Haven't done it so I really don't know. I probably will be giving it a go at the end of the repo cruise - the jackpot is going to be HUGE!!

Hairbrading onboard has a per braid charge.

Other people have talked about spending money onshore. Unless its at Castaway Cay, thats a different bill from your onboard account.

I think thats all of the areas that you can spend money ON the ship.

#3 - Can a couple that is cruising without their kids REALLY find a moment of peace and quiet and where?
Adult Pool, Cove Cafe, Palo for Brunch and Dinner, Sessions (a piano bar down in beat street). The entire Beat Street area after 9pm. Your room;). If you have a verandah it might not be so private :rolleyes1 . Wine tasting class. The Adult "Education" series (The Art of Entertaining, The Navigators and The Art of Entertainment).

Then there are some things that you should do even though "the place will be crawling with kids". The Sail Away / Deck Parties, Pirates Night, family cabarette shows and the family game shows (the cabarette and games shows generally run from 7:45 to 8:15 between the dinner seatings), character breakfast, the main shows in the Walt Disney Theater.

Have a great trip.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful tips. I could have save my bucks in buying all those books and just asked the great people on the DIS!

Again, thanks. :cool1:

Ok...now how about 1st Time Cruisers with no kids on the Eastern Cruise? Got enough info on the ship, just need some GOOD tips on excursions.

Also, keep in mind that any excursion we go on MUST HAVE a restroom
VERY NEAR by (Crohn's Disease).

TIA :flower:

I can help you with one. All roads lead to Castaway Cay and parasailing, though short, is a thrilling adventure (if you like those kind of things)! I never met a roller coaster I wouldn't ride and never met a horror movie I wouldn't watch so it's right up my alley! Maybe something to think about if you're the adventurous type. I hope others will be as helpful to you as they were to me! Good luck!
