I have enjoyed reading everyones notes, they are a big help. We are very new to this and will appreciate all suggestions. My husband and I are going with 3 of our 4 sons, 17, 14, 10. I am most concerned about the excursins, which can we do on our own, where should we use the islands services? Would like to do snorkeling once, and we like to walk/bike and sight see. How do you get back and forth to the boat? Are the times restricting, or flexible? I asume nothing is include once you are off the boat, is that true on their own island also? HELP!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the DIS!!!!! I know it can be very overwhelming with so much info out there. We have been on the Eastern 7-day twice and are going on the Western in August so I do not have too much personal experience info to give you.

On Castaway Cay you can rent banana boat rides, parasailing,. The snokerling is better on the o ther island than on CC. The water there gets stirred up from everybody and can make it difficult to see very far. We ususally just hang out and relax on CC.

To get back and forth to the ship you just walk. The ship docks pretty close to the shopping area at each port. CC has about a 10 minute walk to the beach area for you can take a tram (walking is quicker because the tram fills up so quickly).

You are correct that not much is included once you are off the ship. The exception is Castaway Cay where a BBQ lunch is provided. There is also bar service which is extra, but they have a wonderful fresh fruit buffet and ice water, fruit punch and either lemonade or ice tea complimentary.

Make sure you tell the 17 & 14 year olds to attend the teen 411 meeting the first night of the cruise at Common Grounds. There will be an invitation in the stateroom for them the first day. This is where all the teens meet and get to know each other. Most break into groups and hang out the whole cruise together. I have a son 17, a daughter 18 and a daughter 14. WE have sailed 5 times on DCL and they are still keeping in touch with teens from all the previous cruises!!!!

Hope I helped answer a few questions. Just keep reading these boards and you will be amazed at the info you can learn.

Have fun!!!! and don't hesitate to ask .....no question is dumb!!! We are sailing a few weeks after you on 8/3!!

Where in Northern NJ are you. I used to work in Ramsey/Mahwah and my dad has owned a business in Ho-Ho-Kus for over 40 years.

We're also cruisin' on July 20th! We have a thread going for those that are on this cruise and we'd love for you to join in. The thread name is "Calling all July 20th Western Cruisers".

21 days and counting down!!

Hi nmouse 37 and partiesnballoons.....thanks for your tips and replies. Looking forward to meeting you in 3 short weeks. How is breakfast and lunch done, which nights are the dress up nights? Do the kids enjoy that or do they prefer to be more casual, and is there an alternative dinner spot? You have been a big help. Thanks

MJ! Now where in the world is the LAST place I thought I would see someone talking about Ho-Ho-Kus??? :Pinkbounc

I grew up there! What is your Dad's business??

Formal night is on Monday night and Semi-formal is on Thursday night. Also, any night you are in Lumiere's it is semi-formal except for Saturday night.

For breakfast and lunch you have the choice of Topsiders Buffet, Lumiere's or Parrot Cay. They also have Pinocchio's Pizzeria and Pluto's Dog House open for lunch.

If your kids would rather not dress up for dinner, Topsiders Buffet, Pinocchios Pizza and Pluto's dog House are available. You would have to check your navigator for dining times.

There are lots of great sites that you can get all information you need to help you plan your vacation. Dave's site and Barb's site are among the best. I do not know how to put the link here so if someone else reads this and knows how... can you please post them? thanks.

Hi Fawn.....that is so funny!!! My dad owns a Barber Shop on Sheriden Avenue called Art's Barbershop. Right across from the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn. He collects all sorts of war memorabilia and the shop has all his collections all over it.

Our very good friends live in Ridgewood.

MJ

OMG! MJ, my Dad used to get his hair cut there!! This is incredible! I lived just two blocks off of Sheridan on Hollis Drive. Still know a lot of people up that way.

We used to eat at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn...at one point I went to school with a boy whose family owned it! My late hubby and I had our wedding reception at the Ridgewood CC.

It's a Small World After All, eh!! :)

Yes the 1st cruise can be overwhelming. just go have a great time and things will take care of themselves. Most of the time it's better to wing it anyway. DCL does a fantastic job and you will have the time of your life.
