You would probably have to make arrangements to use some credit card. Or get money sent by someone. Don't know about onboard, but onshore hospitals will not treat unless you can pay up front.

guess i shouldn't cruise for awhile. i dont have any credit cards right now, only a debit card. I would be totally screwed. :/ bummer insurance only reimburses

You can purchase travel insurance that the medical coverage is primary (generally it's secondary - that's why you have to apply for your own insurance to reimburse first). But I believe it costs more. And I think you still need to pay up front and submit to the insurance company when you return home.

We just had to use the medical onboard the Dream the first week of December. My husband had an irregular heartbeat and heat exhaustion. They were great. We were impressed by the care. It was about $600 by the time all was said and done, which his health insurance will reimburse us for. Lesson learned, though. We'll definitely be buying insurance for our cruise from New York to Puerto Rico.

Good to hear that your sister is okay! That must have been scary to go through.

If you have good travel medical coverage through your employer, is purchasing medical coverage for a cruise still needed?

Your regular (American) health insurance plan, i.e. Kaiser or Blue Shield, etc., doesn't kick in?

As to whether insurance you already have will cover... it depends on the plan. Some will but many do not cover "foreign" medical expenses -- and once you step foot onboard the ship you are considered outside the U.S. So you'll want to double-check your personal insurance. Regardless, I don't believe onboard the ship will bill direct to the insurance, as PP mentions above it will be charged to your onboard account and you will need to satisfy that before they allow you to debark. If you or a member of your party were to have some catastrophic expense incurred onboard... I don't know if you could make any kind of alternative payment arrangements with DCL.

Enjoy your cruise!

I'm asking more for medical expenses. Not reimbursement of trip. I will be flying into Seattle, taking a train to Vancouver where the cruise embarks to Alaska.

I looked up Allianz like a PP suggested and they have domestic and international options as well as a cruise option. Just wasn't sure which was accurate for my specific trip since it's a combination (we'll be in Vancouver for a day BEFORE the cruise as well).

I always pick cruise for the trip type. I don't recall ever seeing a domestic or international option so I think its automatically considered international once you pick cruise.
