I took our dog Griffin to the vet today. He has been having runny eyes and a rash on his stomach. He'd also chewed an area on one leg raw. The vet said he has a staff infection and a hot spot. Golden retreivers are very prone to hot spots. These spots itch so bad, the animals actually pull all of the fur out in that area. For the staff infection he gave me an antibiotic. He then gave Griffin a cortizone shot for the itching. On the way to the car, Griffin got sick to his stomach. He got sick again in the car on the way home. By the time we got home, he was breathing very fast and slobbering. I called the vet and they said to bring him back in. By the time I got him there, his blood pressure had bottomed out. They had to give him epinephrine (not sure of the spelling) and benydryl. They put him on an IV. I was waiting out in the waiting room. I didn't realize how serious it was until they called me back. The doctor was very upset that this had happened. He said it was very rare, but we had almost lost Griffin. If I hadn't gotten him there when I did, he would have died. They kept him on the IV for a couple of hours. He's home now. He still has the cathetar just in case he should begin feeling bad again. If he is okay tomorrow, they will take it out. He had an allergic reaction to the cortizone. It's strange because he's had cortizone in the past. Thinking back, he had a bit of a reaction when he had his last vacinations. The vet said we would need to be very careful medicating him in the future. Thank heavens his is okay. I don't know how I would have told Kendall that her best buddy was gone.

Wow, it sounds like your dog had an anaphalactic reaction to the antibiotic. I am glad it turned out fine.

I'm so glad that you got Griffin back to the Vet in time. How scary.

YIKES! Yeah, sometimes I forget that animals can have awful reactions to meds just like people.

I'm glad he's ok but dang, what a close call!!

I'm sorry your doggy is not feeling well. I hope he gets better soon. I lost a pet and its hard because they are just like a kid to you. Spoil him rotten while sick just like a kid:p

I know how scary that is. Our dog had an anaphylatic attack after a Rabies vaccine. It is more common than you think. Next time you go to have his vaccines....have them one at a time (is, not rabies and distemper at the same time). Discuss with the vet if you should wait in the office to see a reaction or if he should have steroid or benadryl prior to the vaccine. Our dog died of other causes, but after the first reaction, he had to have a steroid injection with his rabies vaccine....but that was because he couldnt have benadryl for other medical reasons.

I'm glad your doggy is okay now!

Glad to hear you took him back, and he is OK.:o We love our fur-babies. ;)

Wow! What a day you're had....and your poor doggy. Hopefully he will be feeling better real soon.

That's awful. I'm glad you were able to get him back so quickly.

I"m so glad you got him to the vet in time. My golden had a massive hot spot and a huge staph infection several years ago. He was given steroids for the hot spot but evidently it depresses his immune system and the staph infection went nuts!!! Almost lost him. It's so hard to know the right thing to do anymore. Give your furbaby lots of hugs!!!

Exactly why I have my dogs treated holistically.

No offense to regular vets, but had I listened to their advice, I doubt my two little dogs would be alive today.

Sorry about your puppy, I'm glad he's doing better.

Gold Bond powder works better than any medication for hot spots- it dries them up almost right away! And it is a lot safer than steroids and antibiotics!

My puppy hurt herself and was bleeding all over it was so scary. I know how scary it is! Hope your fur baby is doing well now :flower1:

How scary that must have been for you. I am glad he's home and doing better.

Thank Goodness you took him right back in! I am sure he will be fine now.
My Sheltie had a reaction to a shot once. swelled all up and had problems breathing. She spent the night at the vet's office with IVs and all that stuff. Scarey!

I am glad you got him back to the vet in time. Hope he makes a full recovery.
