Before anyone starts, I did call my doctor's office but according to the recording they are "in a staff meeting" until 1:00.

I was opening the door to let my dogs outside and as my dogs rushed the door it slammed into 2 of my toes and they kinda got wedged under. Both are pretty swollen and one is starting to bruise pretty bad (on the tip and just under the nail). It's very painful to touch but not too bad to walk on. I'm thinking there is nothing that can be done and don't want to waste a day at the ER. Other then icing is there anything else that I should do?

When I broke mine I couldn't get my shoes on or walk -- maybe they aren't broken. Keep them up and iced, and if you are having trouble walking at all use crutches.

It might help to tape them to the toes that aren't hurt.

I broke my pinkie toe a long time ago. All they did was tape it to the next toe.

YIKES! Just reading that hurt! :guilty: In addition to ice take an anti-inflammatory (or seven :rotfl: ). Your doctor will probably want to see you, especially if you did damage to the nail (my friend did this and lost the nail). You poor thing!!!!

Feel better!

Seems like I break toes on a regular basis. Comes from being brain dead and not wearing shoes. :teeth:

Ice for at least the 1st 24 hours. Elevate the foot that got hurt. Stay off your feet as much as possible. Let someone else let the dogs out. :teeth:

You're correct, there's really not much they can do but if the pain and swelling persists over a few days or if the toes get red and hot, get seen ASAP.

A broken toe really hurts! You have my sympathy.

Well I just got back from my third trip to my podiatric surgeon due to broken toes and finally the necessity for surgery due to a crack that never heald. Go to a foot doctor not a primary care. It took me 12 YEARS to get my foot fixed. IF I had had it x rayed they would have KNOWN that it was cracked much before this and I could have had it fixed. They will also give you an anti inflamitory. I was at the point that I could not even get a WIDE sneaker on my foot. I had the surgery a month ago and it seems better though still sore it will take about 6 months to be completely fine. Feet are not the eaiest things to heal.

Funny/tragic note: I am going to Disney on July 29! My old wide sneakers are still not comfortable. I had to go to the Rebok store and luckily the clerk told me if I got a man's 1 and 1/2 size smaller than my size sneaker I could get them to a quadruple e width. It really helped but I still want to wear strappy sandals. My doctor told me I need to wear shoes to help keep my foot alignled. Keep that in mind if you cannot get a shoe on your foot and need to get a closed toe.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I have tears in my eyes just reading your post.I broke one toe and it hurt for what seemed like forever. Make sure you take some type of pain medication (aspirin etc..). I hope it feels better soon.

Ouch! Poor you :guilty:. I broke a toe before and I still remember how painful it was. There isn't much the doctors can do (maybe tape them?) but maybe they can give you some stronger pain medication.

I'm so sorry you've broken your toes! I have to tell you this story... When my ds was about 3 we went to Toys R Us... you know how you go to grab a shopping cart and they get stuck...well ds headed into the store...so I'm trying to hurry and I yanked on that cart and it came out and totally smashed my 3 baby toes.... I had a sandal on and thought I was going to pull it off and pour out blood.... I didn't but they were so swollen and bruised so bad...it hurt so bad to walk...but I got ds and continued shopping for the next 6 hours ::yes:: !!! The attack of the shopping cart!!!! You can still tell the difference, those 3 toes are a little larger than the ones on my other foot! Hope your toes feel better soon... take you some good pain reliever :)

Rest, Ice (no more than 20 mins at a time in every hour for the first 48 hours) Compression (so yes, tape that toe to the one next to it if it begins to swell, but not so tightly that it hurts to tape) and elevate the foot so the swelling is lessened.

See a doctor if the swelling is more than marginal and the toe becomes really red. and painful. If you can wiggle and flex it, generally it's not broken but strained, and an antiinflamitory (ibuprophen /tylenol/asprin) will be your best friend. If it hurts too much to walk, SEE YOUR DOCTOR.

I hope you heal fast. My little toes are mangled because of that danged 1970's heavy wooden legged furniture. OUCHIWAWA.

Well, the doctor sent me to get xrays... both toes definitely look broken now (completely bruised all the way around, swollen and can't move them). He's afraid that because of the way it happened I may have broken something in my foot as well. Since I went to an xray office and not the hospital, I won't get the results back until tomorrow. I can still get around pretty good.

Thanks everyone :goodvibes

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that! Keep us updated with the x-ray results tomorrow. Hope you get to feeling better!

Vicadin and a glass of wine will heal your toes....

I'm glad to hear you got xrays.

When my DS (2 years old at the time) broke his toe, the MD actually pushed it into place. The poor kid screamed so hard, his mouth started to bleed.

He had to do it twice so that it was in the right spot. Then bandaged his whole foot.

Two hours later, DS was jumping around.

Hope you feel better soon.
