DD14 has applied for the last 3 years to be a Mackinac Island Honor Scout. They are a group of Girl Scouts (or boy) who serve on Mackinac Island for a week during the summer and give tours, raise and lower the flags, etc...

This year she made it in :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

She is so excited to be chosen. There are about 65 girls there for the week and about 200 + apply every year. She has worked hard to get there too.

Now we just need to get her paperwork in and hopefully find a good used uniform. The uniforms are special to our groups scouts. I just hope I don't have to try and make one. UUHHGG!!! That would stink.

Deb, know of any uniforms for sale in a small or size 5???

Congratulations! It sounds like a great experience and I'm sure she will have a great time. :flower:

Wow! That is so awesome! Congrats to her on her hard work and dedication--that is such a great honor!

This is her 3rd year od applying. They can start applying in 7th grade but very few get in that young. You can keep applying through your senior year in HS. It all depends on how many openings there are too. Last year there was 3 (once you're in, you are picked to return unless you are a slacker). DD was one of 5 who received a phone interview and was told if she didn't get in then she probably would next year. This year there was 6 openings and she received the phone interview (which her brother forgot to tell her was going to happen) and got in. No phone interview the first year. I think there were only 2 openings.

Next year I heard there is only one. Wouldn't want to be the person who had to pick just that one girl.

Congratulations! That will be an awesome experience fro her!!

Way to go I would love to visit there one year!

that's so cool! congrats to her! maggie

That is terrific! My girls were just talking about it last week. One of my 4 made leadership (PAL) this year! To emphasize how special this is those 65 girls come from 4 councils serving over 4000 girls in the age bracket. The 200+ Sue referred to apply for the 35 openings in her daughter's council. My council only has 10 slots so getting in is tough!

And yes, I may know of a uniform! At least the pants and shorts. It is going to depend on length. Michelle is going to need a new set this year and most of her jeans are size 7 so if they are long enough the size should probably work! And if her's don't I know one of my other girls immediately released the waist band as soon as we were back in the car last week Tuesday after we did a local flag ceremony.

Michelle won't be at the training on the 18th though as we will be gone for mid-winter break. So maybe I can catch up with you after the holidays but before then.

GIve Kelli a giant hug from me and her 4 new MIHS sisters in Muskegon!!!!!!

Congratulations, that is so awesome for your daughter. That will be an awesome experience for her. Make sure she takes a camera so she can document her experience.

The have a variety of uniform parts on the national website that are discounted because they are changing the uniform once again. I did not check out to see what sizes they had of the different parts. They are available at GS Sale Items. The pants, skirts, and shorts are $4.99 a piece brand new. A awesome deal if you ask me. Considering how expensive that stuff is normally.

What a wonderful experience for your daughter. You must be so proud of her. :)

What week will she be there? My Mom and I are planning a trip next summer to Deerfield/Ford Museum and thought we might take a few days on the island too! How cool if we could make when she is there to see her in action!

Hey Cindy,

Their week of service is "tentatively" set for July 15-22, 2006. The date is always listed as tentative just in case it gets shifted for some reason but this unit has had that date for years!

Becky - wouldn't it be awesome if we could but no one else in the country wears this uniform except for the handful of Michigan units that serve on the island. Because of the special nature of these units (if memory serves there are 7 and most are in the 50 person range ours is a bit larger) national authorized a special uniform quite a few years ago. It is the traditional green that people associate with GS. The girls purchase either the fabric or used items in the lovely green polyester doubleknit for their pants & shorts. If it is fabric it is the girl/family's responsibility to get them made from a particular pattern with every detail specified. They wear this with a traditional short sleeved white blouse with a tab tie at the neck that denotes Cadetter or Senior level, a sash that is of the same green (yep we make that too), green knee socks with the old style flashes (color identifies member, leadership, or adult), and the traditional style overseas cap (that thing that looks like the soda jerks hat). They also have a green flannel lined wind breaker, sun hat for standing guide duty when it is bright as sunglasses are a no no because of the historical nature of the sight, and a rain poncho. Even shoes, watch, etc are specified.

A minor pain is just getting it all together. But even though the girls tease about being "pretty in polyester" and "polyester princesses" they are ENORMOUSLY proud of those uniforms. The girls in my troop in the unit will NOT wear any other uniform. And a week ago when several were asked to participate in a community wide event and do the opening flag ceremony the were the center of attention for the younger girls who know what MIHS is and perhpas dream of being part of the unit some day!

So I know exactly how excited Sue is for Kelli. This is really, really a major deal and a source of tremendous pride for the parents!

Here is a link to the Michigan Trails website with a photo and more details for those interested! http://www.gsmt.org/programs-mihs.shtml

Deb,

I can probably pick up the uniform from you at work too. I am not a seamtress so buying would be good. I am going to check with Elizabeth and Rachel too. I was going to let you know I noticed several trainings were in Zeeland. If you want to hang out and scrap those Sats., let me know. Maybe we can even get a few more W. MI DISER's too.

I will give her a hug from you and I know she can't wait for trainings to start and meet the girls in the unit. She really looks up to Elizabeth so I hope she can help Keli with meeting new girls.

Sounds good Sue - let's wait til after the holidays though. I haven't even looked at locations just dates! And the first one is a major league pain because it is over our mid-winter break and we'll be gone. I know Alison will be gone also. Getting that absence approved by Rachel is at the top of my to do list this weekend. Ok, right after the tea on Saturday.
