I was just offered a job. Yippee, right?

Except they just told me I could not park on campus due to space issues. They never mentioned this in the interview. And it could be a deal buster.

I would drive from home heading north THROUGH a congested city to the other side of it, then drive a mile off the exit and wait for a shuttle to take me back south a few miles to the office.

It's a part-time job that would cause me to acquire daycare for my kids BECAUSE of the commute.

I could cry. Any advice?

Any chance of finding a carpool?
Is there any mass transport in this city?

Not a big deal. Lots of people take shuttles to work b/c campuses are too crowded...universities, hospitals, big corps. If you want the job, take it.

Is there a parking garage/lot nearby, for other office buildings/apartments? You might be able to do monthly parking there. My second thought was that maybe once you got into the job and made a few friends, possibly you can carpool with someone who drives to work! My third thought is to check craigslist or other classifieds. Some people rent out garages or parking spaces.

I am not sure where you are at. My hospital they say all new employes need to park in a lot offsite but there is not issues with parking onsite. :confused3

Is the office South of the city or in the middle of the city? Based on your description it doesn't sound like the commute to the shuttle is THAT much more than the commute to the offic since it's just a few miles North. Does the commute to the office itself kill the deal or is it just the shuttle?

Like PP's asked - can you carpool or mass transit? If Nuride is in your city, I highly recommend it. It is a carpooling resource and you earn "miles" for local stuff like restaurants, museums, etc: www.nuride.com.

Also, is there a cost for the shuttle? Can you park and ride from closer to home and not have to battle the traffic through the city?

If it were me I'd lay out a spreadsheet with the salary, commute costs, and daycare costs and make a decision based on the dollars and cents.

You need to calculate how much that daycare will cost, plus the gas and cost to park and take the shuttle to work.

You may find that you will break even or lose money. In that case it sure wouldn't be worth it.

If you fiqure out you'd still make enough money to cover those costs and have enough money left to make it worth it, I'd take the job.

If it doesn't work out, you could quit and look for another job that would work better.

Only you can answer this question. Is it worth it?

Do you really need the job/money? Will you even be making money once you figure in the child care costs/any food you buy while at work/work clothes/gas/etc.?

For me, it wouldn't be worth it. But then, I don't "have" to work for us to make ends meet. I work so we can have extras. But I realize how very fortuanate I am to be in that situation. If you need the job to make ends meet and jobs are hard to come by in your area, then you might just have to deal with it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Some daycare providers won't even take part time kids so I would check into that first.

I'm not understanding why the commute is the only part of the job that would require you to get daycare?

all good points - what's point of working if you're only going to be paying for daycare, gas and shuttles?

Don't forget to check how the income is going to affect your tax bracket.
