OT: where can i buy alum for my dd's science project?

So far, I have checked two grocery stores and they don't carry it. DD needs it to create crystals for her science project. Where can I buy it online? I googled it and there are many types. Now I am scared I will buy the wrong thing. Help!

Did you try teaching supply stores? I know the ones near me sells science kits and may have additional supplies.

just checked my local Beckers Parent Teacher store. they have crystal sets but no alum alone. hmmmmm. i can always get a kit. i just liked the idea of using ingredients in the home for her science project. thanks for the tip, though! i may end up at Beckers.

A pharmacy. They may have to order it for you from the regional warehouse, so call ahead and ask.

In grocery stores that have it, alum is normally shelved in the spice aisle. It's used in traditional-method pickling.

PS: Those "crystal" deodorant sticks are made of alum, as are styptic pencils for when you cut yourself shaving.

I have a big carton - it's used in making pickles. PM roughly where you live - maybe I can share some if we're close enough.

I buy alum in our grocery store, it's either in the spice section or where they sell the pickling/canning supplies. As another poster mentioned it's sold by McCormick and you can get either powder or crystals. I put powdered alum on canker sores to shrink them. They say that's an old wive's tale but it works for me.

Another source may be your local vet's office. They often use alum on cats after the declawing procedure to stop bleeding. When our cat was declawed they sent along a container of alum for us to use at home.
