OT: What kind of gift for Eagle Scout ceremony?

My good friends son just had his Eagle Scout ceremony last month. We have known them since the son was just 4 years old so we have watched him enjoy Boy Scouts for a long, long time. We wrote him a letter telling him how proud we were of him and how fortunate we are to have him in our lives, we made a donation in his honor to a charity he frequently volunteers for and gave him a little cash. He is going on a big camping trip this summer and needs to buy some equipment so I know the cash will be put to good use.

Congrats to your nephew.

Wow, congratulations.

My oldest is in his first year as a boyscout (he did cubscouting) and he can't wait to get Eagle. He already has the goal! :thumbsup2

The engraved watch sounds like a fantastic idea.

Late post, but when our nephew reached Eagle Scout status, we got him a substantial gift card to Bass Pro Shops. He and his dad hunt, fish, camp, etc. together, so we thought he would like this. His thank-you note was full of gratitude and exclamation points and we could tell it wasn't written by his mother!

First I would try to honor his project, as well as him. Find out what he just spent so many hours dedicating himself to and either donate money or time towards it.

Then I would find something sentimental to go with $$ for him :)

(or maybe a "fun pack" or movie tixs, restaurant gift certificates, season passes, etc for him to relax with this summer or at college.Be sure to write something like, you've done a great job, now it is time to relax.)

Wow, great thread. My DS just passed his Eagle board of review last week :) and I am so proud of him. I am grateful for all the good ideas posted for gifts. I'm sure I will be asked that question by our friends and relatives in the next couple months.

Looking forward to planning his Court of Honor -- he and a good friend passed their review boards together and will have a joint ceremony.

Youngest had a triple with two friends over winter break since the third earned Eagle right before they went away to college. It was great.

Congrats to your nephew this is very definitely a big deal.

In the entire 100 year history of Boy Scouts in the US there have been slightly over 1,000,000 Eagle Scouts (number 1 million was last summer). That's just 10,000 scouts a year making eagle. That means based on the current population only about 0.003% makes Eagle in any given year.

My brother is an Eagle scout and my oldest DS is working toward his Eagle scout - it's a lot of work. My brother earned his Eagle twenty years ago and he is still very very proud of that accomplishment. He says it has helped him get jobs that when the market was competitive his job experience is not what got him in the door his Eagle Scout Award did.

I think the engraved watch is a great idea.

As for scouting commemorative items - if that is the sort of thing you are interested in purchasing there are some items that can only be purchased for Eagle Scouts - I know there is a ring (my parents bought it for my brother and it was a big deal to get it) and there are also a couple of other items. You must have the Eagle scout's name and the date he earned his Eagle to buy them and they will verify that information- Definitely something to ask about if you go to a scout shop.

As the mother of an Eagle scout, I can attest to the fact that it is a big deal. For his Eagle Ceremony he got many great gifts. Many of the local elected officials, reprsentatives and local business people attended and/or sent gifts--Victronix knives, watches, engraved pens and so on. He also received a flag which was flown over the capital, along with a letter from the President of the US. I am sure your nephew will also recieve a flag and he might like a nice case to display the flag. You could get an engraved plate with his Eagle information on it to place on the case.

Another nice gift which my son got from the troop is a stained glass Eagle Scout plaque. It is on a wooden stand which also has his Eagle Scout information on it. This was purchased at the Scout Shop.

It would be really nice if you could attend the ceremony. It is a very special time for the scout and I am sure you would enjoy it. Not many people get to attend an Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

Congratulations to your nephew and the family!

So proud of so many DISer related Eagle Scouts!!!

I'm really learning so much more about this and if DH and I ever have a son, we will certainly encourage him to follow in his cousin's footsteps!!

I went shopping for the watch today.... going again tomorrow. It's a hefty spend but I'm so excited about it!!! Haven't found just the right one yet but hopefully will find one prior to this weekend so we can overnight it to him!

I did check flights again for just me to fly down and it's way over $600 so no way I can attend. He's the only one in this Court of Honor this time. Sad I'm missing it but hoping my sister can streamline it on the web or at least tape it for us.

I spoke with my nephew today and he totally understands that we cannot come. Such a good young man. I couldn't be prouder!

Congrat's on your nephew reaching the rank of Eagle it takes a lot of time and work, my son made Eagle last year and most gifts were of cash or some form of a gift card. Lionel trains is coming out with a Boy Scout train and I was surprised but I showed it to my son and he said that he would really like to have it. We do collect and run trains so I am sure that helps, they also have a special anniversery card to add to it. Just thought I'd share this info just in case.

I usually give a Cabelas' gift card because we have one close by.

One unique gift my son received upon reaching Eagle rank was from his aunt and uncle. They made a donation to the city zoo for one year in support of the American Bald Eagle exhibit. We made a special trip to the zoo to take pictures of "his" eagles that year.

Congrats to him for sticking with it.

I am a Cubmaster and have a son that will graduate to Boy Scouts next month. He does have Eagle in his sights.

Only 1% of scouts make it to Eagle so it is an exclusive group.

One no cost idea is a letter from NASA. Look on their website and they will send a personalized letter to him congratulating him on his accomplishment. Of the 12 men to walk on the moon, 11 were scouts. That is a stat that no one can argue against.
