OT-What do you use for really bad diaper rash?

My dd would be so RED from diarrhea her butt was glowing.i always gave her baking soda baths an would leave her diaper off( hard to do with diarrhea) but letting the air get to it helped the most.Desitin would make her scream as did butt paste.

any white cream like balmex mix with a small portion of lotrimin, neosporin, and cortaid, and if its really bad a little maalox, this has always cleared both of my kids in a day and half. i never added the maalox that is a new recommendation, my ped told me. this is her recipe and she said it is basically what is in the triple paste but better. good luck i feel bad for your dd. we are also trying to potty train without much luck

The first thing you have to do is keep it dry and don't use wipes. Use a warm wash cloth to wash off the diaper area, then dry well (i've used a blowdryer), then put on your cream. I swear by triple paste.

as some previous posters suggested, we used Lotrimin AF (well, the cheaper, generic version) on the advice of one of the nurses at the pediatrician's office. It really does the trick. I clean the rash *very* gently w/cotton balls and warm water and then put the Lotrimin on and then kind of "seal" it with a thin layer of vaseline.

Once I learned about Lotrimin, I never used Desitin or any of the other creams again!

Milk of Magnesia. Just pour it on. My DS had diaper rash one time that wouldn't clear up with anything. It was gone in just a day or 2 with the MOM. It's very soothing, too.

My DS used to get heartbreaking diaper rash whenever he had to take penicilyn for something. Our pediatric nurse told us about this little cocktail that worked like a charm - and it worked FAST! Interestingly enough, it includes some of the ingredients recommended by other posters, just in a different form:

Mix equal parts of:

Desitin
Maalox or Mylanta
.5% hydrocortizone cream
Lotrimin

I know it sounds weird, but I also know that when it gets that bad you'll try anything. Good luck!

Let her go bare off and on until is clear up, that really helps. When she is wearing a diaper, I always use the purple desitin, it is great!

A&D Ointment. Both my kids would get horrible diaper rash from time to time and every time I would lather up their rearends at night and put a diaper on and by morning it was gone, no joke. It is like very thick vaseline, and it is the only thing that has ever worked on both my kids.

DS2 used to get really bad diaper rash. If you didn't change him the second he'd pee, he'd be red like no one's business. We used Happy Hiney. It does require a perscription, but I found out pedi was quick to call it in--for anyone; I'd refer others. We also used unscented, natural wipes.

Whole Foods sells something called Egyptian Magic - it works wonders!!

My 1st DD had terrible diaper rashes we tried every product known to man. the only thing that worked other than prescription nystatin was aveno hydrocortizone. The Aveno worked quickly also.

Nystatin is for yeast so if she has yeast they will give her that.

Otherwise, I agree that she needs a butt paste and then aquaphor over the paste. The paste will act like the barrier and the aquaphor will come off when you wipe her to protect her skin. Good luck.

DS just had a horrible one (open sores). The ped recommended getting something called Domeboro. It comes in little powder packets. You mix it with water and then soak them in it - we made DS sit still in the bath for 15 minutes. Two treatments and it was gone.

I found it in the first aid section at Walgreens

I have tried so many products and the one that has worked the best, hands down, is Ammens Original Medicated Powder. Big white bottle. Just sprinkle it on.

We use/d this all of the time!

We also used a combination of Mylanta mixed with aquaphor. Easiest to mix if you put it into a baggie and squish.

Went through this with our daughter a while back too. The best thing we found was letting her soak in the bath with baking soda and then air dry. She went diaperless for 2 days strait except for nighttime. She was pretty sick so she was pretty content to just sit on a towel and watch movies. As a general rule when one of the kids starts to get a little diaper rash I switch ointments every time I change a diaper. Since I am not a rash expert I don't know which ointment feeds vs. fights so I figure the more often I change it up the better chance I have to actually get it right. :confused3

I use the Aveeno one and it worked for my son. But I also agree with NO wipes (just water) and air drying (or using a blow dryer).

My other tip is if your child is really sore I put the diaper cream all over the diaper (really thick) then put the diaper on. My son was really hurting and just putting the diaper cream his bottom was agony!!

Good luck!

Triple Paste....it's the best be far.....a bit expensive but the only thing that would clear up my any diaper rash in this house!! Good luck!!

I swear by Triple Paste. It usually clears things up very quickly.

My 3 year old also had a bad rash caused by runny diarrhea following a sotmach bug. No fun. It took a few days to get better, but it finally did go away.

Triple Paste here to. The only thing that worked for us when it was really, really bad. It is expensive. Was behind the counter at the pharmacy. Recommended by our Peditrician.

I ONLY use Triple Paste. The stuff is AMAZING. I always have it in the diaper bag. I would not use anything else...in fact I have tried...and nothing compares to Triple Paste.

First, to kill the pain, Tucks. Then cover with Aquiphor.

If this doesn't work in about 48 hours, switch to a cream that kills yeast. You can buy the feminine products, but I bought the cheapie stuff at WalMart. Be sure to get the one that has the ingredients in Desenex...miconazole nitrate. Some meds use other ingredients that burn if applied to an open rash.

I had to deal with this for a couple of years with my younger son. What I found that was letting him go without a diaper as often as possible...especially if I could get him out into the sunlight for a bit...really helped get rid of the rash.

As another poster said, the rash is probably yeast-based if it isn't responding to normal diaper creams!

A warning about Aveeno...if your family has allergies, be very careful of this one! It has oatmeal in it, and when I tried it with my son we ended up in a worse spot than we'd been in to start with.

Also, know that all children are not alike. Just because a diaper product works well for most kids doesn't mean it will work for yours if she has particularly sensitive skin.
