OT: "What do you call Soft Drinks?"

Grew up in Ohio, have always called it pop and was shocked to find out people thought that was odd or didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked what kind of pop they had. I don't think I heard it called soda until I was about 30 years old. When I hear soda, I think soda water like tonic, not pop. The "coke" thing is a whole other kettle of fish, how can you call everything coke? :confused3

My husband and I both grew up in Ohio and EVERYONE there calls it "pop". After he joined the military it seems like everyone we met called it "soda" and we have met people from all over the country. Over the past 25 years the word "pop" pretty much disappeared from our vocabulary and we brought our children up using the word "soda" or "soft drinks". Now whenever we visit relatives in Ohio we get strange looks and have to refer to soft drinks as pop again, which believe it or not makes us giggle.

I grew up in Southern Indiana and always called Coke "coke" and everything else was either "soda" or the actual brand name. When I moved to Ohio in Oct. 2000, I noticed that EVERYONE called it "pop".

Curious question for the other Ohioans... do you or anyone you know call Kroger "Krogers" or Meijer "Meijers"? My friend does it and it drives my DS crazy.:rotfl: Even when he was just 4 he would say, "Mom, why does she do that? There is no "s" on either of those buildings." :rotfl:

He taught himself how to read at age 3, and has always been a stickler for accuracy. If the time is 2:58 and you say "it's 3:00", be prepared to hear about how wrong you are. His big brain is a gift and a curse. :lmao:

This is funny! I have lived in five states in the south and they all call it coke, which is normally why I say. However, most of the time I ask the kids what kind of "soft drinks" they would like. I keep a verity. A coke is a coke, a soft drink is anything other than a coke.

Smitch425, I call Kroger..... Kroger! :) it drives me crazy when people say krogers or wal marts. I wanna smack them!

(ahem)

In spite of what the map says, here in Sarasota we just call it "soda", and ask for it by name, "I'll have a large Coke" , "I'll have a Sprite", etc...

Although, down here most everyone is perpetually on a diet, ( the living in a "beach town" curse...) so I'd be willing to guess that unsweetened iced tea outsells soda by a fairly large margin.

So your telling me in the south they just use the term coke.. even when refering to Orange Pop or Gingerale?!?

Probably because Coca-Cola Company is headquartered in Atlanta, GA, and most of their distribution factories are in the south.

I'm in the Eastern Panhandle of WV, so we call it soda.

I'm in central Indiana, and we do just as you did! And yes, it drives me crazy when people say "Krogers", "Meijers" or "The Walmart"

Y'all want a soda!!!! That's how it's done in the south...

It's 'fizzy drink' here in the South of England, I do think they call it 'pop' up north though.

I call it "Pop." Everyone around here does.

The others are too confusing.

There actually is a product called soda. "Scotch and soda"...they're not talking about Diet Dr. Pepper there. They want soda.

Coke is a brand name. If I want Diet Dr. Pepper, I'm not asking for Coke.

Although I know everyone does what they were taught as kids and what the people around them do, I really think "pop" (being so generic) is the most accurate term for the broad spectrum of carbonated beverages.

Little kids aren't able to think abstractly. To him, it is 2:58. They are very literal creatures. He'll grow out of it. I promise! :)

I've been to Krogers and Meijers. I go to the Wal-Mart all the time. (McDonald's is just McDonald's, though. It isn't The McDonalds.) I vacuum, but most people I know "run the vacuum" or "run the sweeper."

I know it is wrong. I don't know why we do it. We just do.

Well, "Pop" is my dad. Soda is the carbonated drink....I match the map!!!

We call it pop here in MN. I learned to be careful while traveling...I don't remember where I was where I thought I was being specific and ordered a "club soda" and got a Canadian Club with a soda "back".

I have grown up with southerners and we call it soda.

How to order soda in the south.
Coke: I would like a coke please.;)
Y'all want a coke.
Sprite. I would like a medium Sprite with my hamburger please.
Dr. Pepper. Can you get some Dr. Pepper from the store?
:thumbsup2

Calling all soda Coke in a general way, I'm not sure where that exactly comes from. Most restaurants serve Coke products that might have something to with it. It is the Coca-Cola Company so that might have something to do with it. I have to admit that I ask for Coke even if the sign states that they only have Pepsi just in case a Coke has snuck in somewhere and I usually just okay the Pepsi when they state they don't have it. Only in the South have I seen Coca-Cola Chocolate cake and it was delicious.
