I saw on the TV news today that AT&T is starting to supplement its TTY Relay Service with a Video Relay Service.

It will be useable by hearing impaired people who have a high speed Internet access (such as cable modem, DSL, or other broadband service) and a web camera and use ASL. Instead of having an operator at a TTY terminal, they have a person who is an ASL Interpreter. According to what I heard, this obviously will be much faster than using TTY as everything does not have to be spelled out.

There will be a nationwide toll-free number for people to call this relay center, and they will then work through the Internet. The small feature (on NBC Morning News) did not tell how the Relay Center would contact a user for an incoming call, but I would guess they would start off using the TTY and switch to the ASL/Web Camera if the end user has this capability.

Sounds neat. There are also new cell phones coming out with video capibility so two signers can use them to speak to each other
