Anyone use one of these ventless air conditioners instead of the typical window a/c unit? I like the idea of only putting a small hole in the wall for one of these things.

May decide to give these a try. I hate the idea of taking up a whole window with an ugly a/c unit. But, when I look them up online, some come with compressors and some don't. Why is that? I thought the appliance was self-contained?

I also have to find one that doesn't have heat, if that exists. Only need a/c. Any help or opinion is appreciated!

I am pretty sure all ductless air conditioners have some sort of outside unit. I think they work well but are pretty pricey due to the installation involved.

If you're only wanting to cool a portion of the house at one time, they are great. If you want it to be like standard a/c where the entire house is cooled, it's not really as beneficial and you'd probably be better off doing central a/c...unless you don't have ductwork already in your house...then I'm pretty sure ductless a/c is cheaper. The benefit of the ductless a/c is that each room (or wherever there is a unit) can be set to a different temp.

Are you talking about a mini-split unit? I have one, and it does a great job of cooling the upstairs of my house, which is the master suite. My house has central air, but it's 80+ years old so there wasn't a lot of room for the duct work to go in. Once I remodeled my basement and added the code-required vents there, the upstairs wasn't getting cool enough. The mini-split wasn't cheap (I think around $4k with install), but it works really well. It does have an outside compressor, so the line goes out the small hole in the wall, down the side of my house, and to the compressor (which is about 1/2 the size of a typical central A/C compressor). Mine is a Fujitsu, and it does not have heat, just A/C and Fan Only options.

The spit systems are actually pretty nice plus one outside condenser can run a couple inside units. So if you have a couple rooms you want to cool it is a great way to go. You only need to run a couple flexible copper pipes that can be hidden in the walls plus most of them are hand remote control operated units or a traditional wall mounted thermostat. These types of ac systems are extremely common in Europe. Just google "ductless air conditioner".
