OT: unusual potty training issue

We've had the self same problem with poos in the potty with our youngest(2 1/2yrs). She has always been a bit funny about doing a #2 and used to go and hide and then become very distressed when she'd gone. Being dry has come pretty easily as we just kept trying every month or so (she showed all the signs at 2 as well but wasn't interested until a few weeks ago) but we had a big problem with the other and as with other kids mentioned here she was becoming constipated. She kept saying she was scared of the poopoo's and that they were dragon's, lion's, etc anything scary. We bought her princess panties and had a big discussion about how poo's weren't disgusting (her favourite word!!) and that even princesses...even the beloved Sleeping Beauty, did poopoo's in the big girl toilet. This has seemed to work as she has been dry and clean for over a week and uses the toilet now. We only use nappies at night and are thinking we should maybe stop them as they are dry in the morning..fingers crossed. A good alternative to medical intervention for constipation is brown sugar dissolved in water..always works if we have 3days+ without any action;) Hope this helps a bit

A big thankyou to everyone for their advice and encouragement.

A bit of an update - she did 2 poo's today at nursery so I feel considerably better now.

I have discussed it with her nursery (who are fantastic) and we have agreed to let things lie for a bit and not mention the toilet unless she wants to.
We are travelling to visit my family in Australia in about 6 weeks so I think we will just leave things alone until after we get back. My major concern was the not going even in her nappy but if that seems to be improving I have no problem with leaving it.

I'm afraid I came from an old fashioned upbringing with a stay at home mum who had us all "trained" at 12 months (or programmed) so I always had very firm ideas about when my child should be out of nappies but I have to admit that the one thing I have learned as a parent is "never say never" - ie my child will never still be in nappies at 3!!!! You just never know until you are in that situation. My Mother will be horrified but at least my dd and I will be happy!!

I will comit the brown bomber to memory though for future reference :rotfl2:

One thing we used for ds was a Pez dispenser. Worked like a charm. We bought a bunch of the same character. It is great since they are cheap, they won't melt like chocolate, easily portable to leave one in diaper bag and at other houses that you may visit. We used that for #1. Then when we concentrated on #2 we used the candy "bottlecaps" they were sort of the same kind of candy but larger. Now I am working on my daughter. The other thing with the Pez dispenser is that many people do not offer you child one like they normally would m&m's or a pop, so it was something unique.

See now here's what our parents forget. You weren't trained. Your Mom was.:cutie:

To me going at the time intervals is usually training the parent to take them. Until they can recognize the feeling it is hard. Sounds like she might some from you description. My dd was doing good at 2 years 3 months but then we moved across country and at 2 1/2 I started again when we settled in finally. I went to panties during the day and although it was a mess for a couple weeks it lessened and lessened. I never pushed her really and didn't make big deal of the accidents either.

It was the day before Easter(back then) when she was playing in living room in panties and started grabbing so I asked her if she needed to go potty she said no and I didn't push and just sat there when it started coming she looked up at me and I said this and grabbed like she did means time to run to potty. The next day at my moms she is sitting at table(in panties) and shouts out "I gotta go potty" and runs to bathroom. It sunk in from that day on and with in a week didn't have any accidents anymore. So I totally believe in the big kid pants helping tremendously and of course keeping it fun learning not stressful or something they dread.

I'd love to know how to solve this too! My dd will be 3 next week and she stays dry all day and all night long and has been doing well for a couple of months. However, she will not go #2 in the potty. She holds it in for days and days until it hurts and then she'll go in her underwear. Any ideas?

Hiya - we had this problem when dd was 3 - she would hold it forever!!! get constipated then poop would leak around the blockage and soil her underwear all the time - we went to the doctor (who had dealt with this before on many occasions reassuringly!!:goodvibes)

Apparently, some kids can't cope with too much fibre - it can compact and make it painful to go, hence they hold it etc - so we fill them with fibre to "help" and it repeats itself etc... The doc put us on a LOW fibre diet for her and a suppository laxative every 2 days - for 10 days (her bowel learns it's ok to let go and it won't hurt....). Since the end of those 10 days we have had no problems! (well, only if she eats bananas for some reason??)

We still see that doctor and dread the day she will retire....

She still may be a lil young! i would try the undies again in a few weeks!

but as soon as she wakes put her on the potty and before she goes to sleep!

most Doctors recommend waiting till 3 years i think :)
