The team has mentioned Tivo's on the podcast several times and I think they've come up in discussion here, too. Just wanted to mention two good Tivo related deals I came across this weekend. Sears seems to be clearing out Tivo HD's at $149 if you can find them, and Best Buy is clearing out the 500 gb "My DVR expanders" (also works with other DVRs) for the Series 3 Tivo's (again, if you can find 'em).

I love my Tivo. :)

We've always been interested in TiVO - but I'm unfamiliar with what normal prices on these items would be. Any help?

Do the DVR expanders set up easily?

TiVo is great, but it's not the best. Before we had TiVo we had Dish Network and I absolutely LOVED it. It was so much easier to use than the TiVo and it allowed you to have 1 DVR for 2 rooms. The TiVo took a lot of getting adjusted to because some of the places they put things just didn't make sense. Like one of the things that I liked the most about the Dish Network DVR was that you could go in and it would show a schedule of things recording and then the things that weren't going to record would be lightly shaded out and have a line through it. So you could see exactly what was recording and then what wasn't recording you could see why it wasn't recording (it would say like "Price is Right" isn't recording because "The View" is a higher priority). You could then just click right on "The View" and hit cancel recording and then it would automatically record "The Price is Right." TiVo for some reason separates what is going to record and what is not going to record into 2 different screens.

TiVo also seems to be A LOT slower in terms of response from the remote. Several times I'll hit a button and it takes a second or two for the TiVo to respond to it.

I do like some of the features that the TiVo has...such as you can stream Netflix through it, you can watch videos from youtube on it...and my favorite of all is that since our job pays for our cable...we only pay $12 a month to have a DVR as opposed to $40+ for Dish Network.

The price depends on the model you get. Let me preface this by saying that it looks like Tivo may be releasing a new model later this year, and that's the reason for the sales on the Tivo HD. List for a Tivo HD seems to be around $299 right now. Amazon had them on sale for around $220 the other day.

I've not had a chance to set my DVR Expander up yet. It appears from the instructions the process is simple. Looks like you power down the Tivo, plug the expander into the Tivo, let it spin up, then power the Tivo on. I think there is a short setup wizard once the Tivo comes back on.

It's not quite like the old days. DW and I each have a Tivo - I bought kits from a company called Weaknees and manually installed new drives in each. For DW's, I was adding a second drive. That process was a wee bit scary!

I have a standard TiVo only as I lost the HD series 3 in the "divorce."

I would upgrade to a new HD TiVo, but I have a lifetime subscription on it and don't want to lose that.

I can't imagine my life without Tivo. I've had mine for over 3 years and it has been slowly dying for the last few months.:sad1: I have to decide to either buy a new machine (not HD, since I have satellite) or get a new hard drive so that I can keep my lifetime contract.

We have a Dish Network DVR in another room and I don't like it at all. Tivo is so much easier imo. And great features. Beside I love the little Tivo logo. He's so cute.

A largely held opinion is if you started with Tivo, everything else pales in comparison. If you started on a non-Tivo DVR, you don't know what you're missing.

I'm in need of a MyDVR Expander for my 20GB Tivo HD but only the 1TB is listed on BestBuy online. I'll have to check my local store tonight.

I have way too many scars because a certain someone in the family needed to record 100GB worth of HD shows while on PCC 1.0 but couldn't. :scared1:
