I know this movie was talked about many months ago on the show, but at that point it was only available on DVD. Animal Planet is now running it. Just watched it.

I thought it was very well done - and I try to state that irrespective of my thoughts on the issue itself....which don't really matter b/c I was watching more from a perspective of, "this won an Oscar...so it must have been well-made."
I am always cautious when I watch a documentary, b/c I try to remember things aren't shown to us in a real-time/unedited format. Another documentary filmmaker taught me that....and it's not who you'd think....it was Marty DiBergi. :)

Agreed. Always take documentaries with a grain of salt.

Personally, I enjoyed the "planning of the mission" clips interspersed with O'Barry's dolphin history. It had an Ocean's Eleven type of feel to it.

Another documentary that had a similar format was Man on Wire. Fantastic, and the subject matter is less intense: Philippe Petit's daring attempt to walk a tightrope between the World Trade Center towers. Lot's of fun.

i saw this movie about a month or so ago. i never knew that the pretty dolphins that get captured are ripped away from their family then sold off to marine parks and are made to perform for the rest of their lives.
the not so pretty dolphins are slaughtered for meat that contains high mercury.

i can't believe that i was so naive - i am not talking about the slaughtering of dolphins (as we wouldn't have known if the cameras weren't planted)-but how these marine parks get the whales/dolphins to perform for our entertainment.

i never stopped to think or knew that they don't get fed unless they perform, they get injected (i forgot the name of the drug) to stop them developing stomach ulcers as they get so stressed in captivity, the chemicals in the water can burn their skin and blind them and they can't swim 40 miles a day plus as they are in tiny tanks.

terrible.

Flipper trainer Ric O Barry says he feels somewhat responsible that we want to 'love dolphins to death'. when one of the flipper dolphins stopped breathing on purpose and died in his arms - Ric then realised it was wrong what he was doing and has been campaigning since 1970 for dolphins to be free in the wild and not kept in marine parks.

I know that the OP is just saying watch this movie nothing more nothing less
and let us please keep it this way.

Don't turn it into another thread like this on the podcast forum that was closed yesterday.
Just keep it nice and clean.

Exactly.

After seeing The Cove, are you going to watch Blood Dolphin$?

Challer have you seen this - in 2006 12 dolphins were captured in japan to be shipped to the dominican republic for dolphin swims while the rest were killed for meat:

Challer will blood dolphins will be shown in the uk?

Yvet - the content of the cove isn't nice and clean so how can discussion about it be nice and clean?

i saw it was coming on- but after seeing the previews, i am not sure i could watch it or not. I do realize how awful this world can be, but not sure if I want to really see it or not. ya know? how bad is it?

I realize this is not an unbiased source by any means, however, I thought these videos released by SeaWorld going over some of the points in "The Cove" (and their discussion afterwards) was interesting - even though it was presented in a very dry, pedantic way.

Thanks. That was interesting, although it did have it's holes in its defense. It also doesn't address the parts of the cove discussing how dolphins are biologically unfit to be in tanks and about their conditions in the parks - captured or bred.

But good to read/see. Thanks for sharing.
