We are planning on taking our 3 1/2 year old to see Planes this weekend. It will be his first ever movie in a theater. I'm so excited! I'm wondering if I should go to the 3D one, or just the regular one. Has anybody brought their young child to a 3d movie? Did it go over well? Did the glasses stay on well enough or did they have to fiddle with them or hold them on the entire movie? I think that's my main concern. Mickey's Philharmagic scared the bejesus out of our son, but that was 6 months ago ( he thought everything flying out of the screen was actually going to hit him). Any thoughts on this? Please share your experiences. Thanks!

My kids have been seeing 3d movies since they were about that age and always done well. Make sure you get kid sized glasses and you should be fine.

If it is his first movie in a theater, I would go non 3 -D. There is enough new things going on without adding the glasses. Theater 3D movies are not near as "at you" as WDW, but if he remembers the experience, might not go as well. That is a great first movie Add plenty of pop corn and enjoy.

Have you taken him to Hollywood studios to see Muppets in 3D? My boys saw that and my twins who were almost 4 were not good with the glasses on at all.

my 6yo really wants to see a 3D movie so my husband said he'd take him to Planes in 3D - mostly b/c I don't think my 4yos will like it (they didn't like Cars at all - boring to them I think b/c the characters all look so similar)... and I can't stand sitting through a full 3D movie- so this will be their special date :)

I have been taking all 3 of my boys to movies since they turned 3 - but none in 3D. They do great in regular movies.

IME my little ones hated wearing the glasses anywhere. I would not bother with 3d.

Oh Geez, looks like 3 votes regular, one vote 3D. There will definitely be popcorn! Keep the thoughts coming!

None of my kids would bother to wear the 3d glasses until the age of 5 or 6. I wanted so badly for them to experience the cool 3d effects (especially at Disney) that I couldn't watch the movie and was constantly trying to put the glasses back on them. They just didn't seem to recognize the 3d until a later age. I vote non 3d.

3D is a no go for my DD (3). She is spoiled and we go to the drive in once a week during the summer. That is our preferred method. Winters are long. Lol.

I wouldn't do 3d for a first movie. He might think he has to wear the glasses for all movies and if he hates them you may have a hard time getting him back to the theatre. If he was scared of Philharmagic just 6 months ago, he may still not like 3d effects either. DD hated wearing the 3d glasses when she was 3. She said they made her head hurt. Getting her to wear them for the length of a movie was about impossible. There was a lot of messing with the glasses and trying to get them back on her face instead of fully enjoying the movie.

We started taking DD to movies at 3 1/2. The first was not 3D, but the second was (Finding Nemo last year) and she did great. Of course, this is a child that I can put sun glasses on her at the beach and tell her to keep them on, and she does. So for her it works. If you DS does not already wear sunglasses, I think I would opt out of the 3D. Also, many of these 3D movies don't really do anything these days, so many are just a waste of money IMO. I personally want to read the reviews about the movie and 3D aspects before deciding if we will take DD4 to the regular or 3D version.

We took our now 5 year old to see Cars 2 when it came out a month before he turned 3... He did really good. Got a little fidgety at the end. We wanted to go see Turbo a few weeks ago but didn't really want to take 22 month old but we ended up going for it... He sat in my lap for a good hour and was fine! Got a little fidgety last 20 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised! :) I'm not sure I'd go for 3d though! I'm sure you all will enjoy!!

I would do 2D. IMO, it's not worth the extra money for 3D when he'll just be happy to see a movie in a theater and eat some popcorn. If Philharmagic bothered him that much, I'd wait awhile until I did 3D again.

Thanks guys. I think I'm definitely leaning towards regular 2D. I agree he will be excited enough just to be in a theater. We can save the 3D part for when he's a little older. He does wear sunglasses fine, but I don't really want to spend an entire movie making sure his glasses are still on. I let you know how it goes.
